At his feet, Jake had a hastily written set list scrawled onto the back of a paper plate. The three musicians had picked three classic rock tracks plus one from each of their own standard set lists. Everyone in the room soaked up the impromptu performance, seemingly oblivious to the fact that this musical interlude had been hurriedly planned in the kitchen less than an hour before. Pausing to take a mouthful of beer, Jake said, “Folks, this is our last one for this year. We’ll leave you with one of our Weigh Station favourites. This is Broken Bottle Empty Glass.”
It was the first time he had performed the song since the London show to celebrate the band’s twenty fifth anniversary. It was a struggle to keep his emotions in check, but Jake sang with his usual dedication and passion, praying that he would get through it without a hitch.
They finished the number with a couple of minutes to spare before midnight. As they laid down their instruments, Maddy came over to take the mic.
“Let’s give a huge cheer for Garrett, Mikey and Jake! My All Stars!”
As the applause and cheers died down, she glanced at the clock.
“Ok, people!” she yelled. “It’s time for the countdown!”
Every guest joined in the count down from ten to one as the clock ticked towards midnight. As she reached one, Mikey snatched the microphone from her and roared, “Happy New Year!”
