Fall Freebie Friday……meet Ellen

“If you don’t feel I’ll fit in then I’ll go now,” said Ellen, trying hard to hide the emotion in her voice. “I’d prefer though if you gave me a chance. Let’s rehearse. Jam a few numbers. If you don’t like what you hear then I’ll go.”

“Can’t say fairer than that, Luke,” challenged Cal, also keen to defend her.

“Luke,” stated Rocky coldly. “Let me put it to you this way. Ellen here passed the audition. The band unanimously voted to give her a shot. I don’t believe you cast your vote. Right now, I don’t believe you even opened the damn email I sent you. If anyone’s position in After Life is in jeopardy right now, it’s yours.  You’re out of line, son. Take this as a final warning.”

“My uncle won’t….” began Luke, looking flustered behind his dark glasses.

“Don’t try to play the Garrett card with me. We all know he doesn’t fund the band. He’s already cast you adrift on your own there. Why he still lets you live in his house I’ll never fathom.”

“Fine. One rehearsal!” snapped Luke, getting to his feet, almost toppling the chair in the process. “Tomorrow. If she’s shit, she goes.”

As he marched out of the kitchen, Luke slammed the door behind him, rattling the display plates on the wall.

“I’m sorry,” whispered Ellen quietly.

That First Proof – Throwback Thursday

I read a Facebook post the other day on one of the writing pages I follow where the indie author was sharing her feelings about holding her first ever novel in her hands. It struck a chord.

I’m still recharging these creative batteries, so I reached for my Continue the Story journal (love it!) and picked a prompt- She knew she’d remember this moment for the rest of her life.

She knew she’d remember this moment for the rest of her life. The Amazon man had dropped the parcel off and left it with a neighbour while she’d been at work. When she arrived home, the neighbour brought it over as she got out of the car, joking, “Is this a copy of your new best seller?” Politely she smiled and thanked him, saying, “You never know.”

She set the brown package down on the bed and stared at it for a few minutes, unsure about opening it. Her heart was pounding in her chest; her hands were trembling. She took a deep breath to steady her nerves. Carefully, she eased back the tear off strip to open the box.

Oh! There it was inside!

Oh! It was thicker than she’d expected.

Nervously, she eased it out, scared to look at it.

It was real!

That was really her name on the front cover and spine. Those were her words filling page after page. It was a dream come true moment.

In her hands, she held the first paperback proof copy of her debut novel.

Never in a million years had she thought that she would actually see her name on the cover of a book yet there it was.

Tears flowed freely down her cheeks as she savoured the feeling of holding her book baby, her first born book baby, in her hands.

That moment was six years ago now and I’m six books into this dream come true journey. Every time that first proof copy arrives, I relive that moment. Holding each book baby for the first time is a moment that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Now to re-focus and finish writing Book Baby 7 so that I get to “meet” it next year.

Ellen….why not check it out this weekend

The cottage garden was sheltered from the breeze and, with the chimnea blazing, the patio felt cosy and intimate. Lit tealights in old jam jars were scattered around the boundary of the paved area, their flames flickering in the darkness. Plucking a gentle melody, Taylor watched as Nana and Jen brought out bowls of crisps and dips and some beers and cider. He smiled over at Ellen, who was sitting on a pile of cushions beside the fireplace.

“You ok?” asked Taylor, noting that she was staring intently at the flames.

“Never better,” she replied with a relaxed smile. “I was just daydreaming.”

“Ghosts in those flames?”

With a wistful smile, she nodded before confessing, “A year ago I couldn’t have sat here. Couldn’t stand to see flames. My dad helped me over those ghosts. Calmed my fears.”

“Shit! I never thought!”

“It’s fine, Tailz,” assured Ellen warmly. “In fact, it’s more than fine. This is perfect.”

A month post partum Book Baby 6….

Scary to think that it’s been over a month since the launch of Book Baby 6 aka Long Shadows.

The Silver Lake fans have welcomed it with open arms and showered it with love and I’m delighted that it’s sitting on Amazon.co.uk with no less than 12 five star reviews already. It’s also earned 2 five star reviews on Amazon.com which to me is HUGE plus 5 five star reviews on Good Reads. I honestly couldn’t have asked for more so thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has taken the time to leave a review.

I’ve said it before that these kind words and twinkling stars fuel the fires of creativity and I genuinely mean it. The kind words this time have made me question if I made the right decision to end the Silver Lake series after five books.

Yes. Yes, I did make the right decision but that doesn’t mean I don’t miss those characters. They’ll be back at some point in the not too distant future I’m sure.

So, what happens now? What happens once your book baby is set free and you’re waiting and watching as the world reads it?

Well, if you’re like me, you start thinking about the next one.

Actually, I started Book Baby 7 a couple of weeks before Long Shadows was published. I bought 5 new matching notebooks and started to write but I didn’t truly connect with it for a good three weeks or more. For once I have the storyline mapped out in my head. (No, I don’t plot these books out. I kind of go with the flow here.)

I think I had a mild case of post-partum book baby blues. Almost a year of living in lockdown has taken its toll on a lot of writers’ creativity and it would appear I’m no exception, but I’ve worked my way through it and have found my way into my own storyline. I just hope I can stay there!

I’m not jinxing my progress by revealing too many details of the focus of Book Baby 7 but will say this – I’m giving myself a generous window of time here. Please don’t expect this one to be ready before summer 2022 at the earliest.

In the meantime, if you’ve not met Jake and Lori and the rest of Silver Lake, you can still catch up with them on Amazon. You’ll also find Ellen hanging out there too.

Author Newsletter..No. 9..slightly later than planned….

Apologies, folks, I appear to have lost track of time and it’s been way too long since I posted a newsletter update.

I’ll blame the fact that 2020 feels as though it’s been one long month since mid-March and there doesn’t seem to be many signs of improvement. C’est la vie!…

Now, where were we?

On the creative front, I’ve been working diligently on Book Baby 6 aka Long Shadows and revealed the cover on my blog on 1st October. Missed the big unveiling? No worries, here’s a reminder:

And, as promised, I also shared a sneak peek inside back in July

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/07/28/a-timely-reminder-and-a-sneak-peek-into-book-baby-6/

I’m currently in the home strait with the first draft of Long Shadows and hope to have the first draft completed by the end of November, keeping me on track (by the skin of my teeth) for the planned  publication date early in 2021. Patience. All will be revealed in due course.

Over the summer months I continued to have fun with some acrostic poetry

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/08/10/resilience-an-acrostic-poem/

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/06/29/lockdown-an-acrostic-poem/

Months of living in lockdown gave me time to reflect on the things that in future I won’t take for granted and I shared those thoughts on my blog in late June (seems a lifetime ago now)

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/06/23/ill-never-take-some-things-for-granted-again/

Since we last caught up, I celebrated a “milestone” birthday and was surprised with the most fantastic birthday cake. Check this out! It was incredible and delicious!

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/07/13/happy-to-eat-my-own-words/

Last time out I told you about The Gingerbread Tea House and their fabulous book exchange.  The owner has put her own lockdown time to good use and has now published her first novel, Chasing Butterflies, with her second, The China Doll,  due for release on 14 November. I caught up with Nicole Thorne earlier this month on my blog

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/10/19/introducing-fellow-indie-author-nicole-thorne/

Like many, I have found 2020 challenging on many different levels. One wise woman in the organisation I work for said a few months back (and I paraphrase) – “don’t think of it as enduring things. Think of it as making history.” And I guess she’s right. Each and every one of us has helped to write history this year and who knows we may still be “making history” well into 2021. Time will tell on that one.

For now, I’ll leave you with a reminder of my mantra. This really has kept me forging forwards this year.

Stay safe, folks

Love n hugs

Coral

You’re a what?…. I’m an indie author

“You’re a what?”

“I’m an indie author.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means that I write independently and self-publish.”

“So, you’re not a real author then?”

WRONG!

support-indie-authors

An indie author is any author who writes then self-publishes to sell, who takes both writing and publishing seriously, who wants to reach as many readers as possible and to grow a profitable author/publishing business. (Sadly, that last bit eludes most of us…trust me on that!)

An indie author is every bit as much of an author as those souls who see their names on the books and ebooks on the various bestseller lists.

You could also argue that perhaps an indie author is more of an author than those backed by agents, editors, publishing houses and a team of publicists. I’ll leave that thought there for you to ponder on…..

So, how do you become an indie author?

Well, you write a book for a start.

I’ve mentioned before my tale of sitting down on my doorstep on 8 May 2013 and beginning to write the story that became Stronger Within, my debut novel, almost two years later. What I’ve not really mentioned is that I kept what I was doing quiet. I didn’t go around telling friends and family that I was writing a book. A part of that was an inbuilt fear of having them laugh at me and tell me I was wasting my time. At that point I was writing a story for me for the sheer pleasure of writing it. I guess I was testing myself to see if I could actually do it.

Then a few wonderful people, my Infamous 5, got behind me and encouraged me to type up my handwritten tale and to publish it as an ebook.

That was a steep learning curve!

Let’s dispel a myth right here about self-publishing. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune to do it. I’ve done it on a shoestring budget.

There are many self-publishing options but I opted for Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) It doesn’t cost a penny to publish via KDP. Those lovely Amazon people even provide free templates to get you started and a step by step process for actually uploading your manuscript to keep you on the right track. Love those templates!

The biggest challenge, at least for me, is marketing and publicising my work. I’m naturally quite a shy person so selling my wares does not come naturally to me.

Precise figures on the subject of ebooks are hard to find. Currently there are somewhere in the region of 7.5M ebooks available on Kindle. Roughly 1700 new ebooks are published each and every day. That works out at about 70 per hour.

Sales figures are equally hard to track down but from what I can gather via Google approximately 50 000 ebooks are sold every month. That works out about 7500 per day.

Now, bear in mind, that readers have 7.5M to choose from.

As an indie author that’s an awfully big ocean to be swimming in and there are some very big fish swimming in it alongside you.

But this little indie author, who really is little more than one wee tiny krill in that vast ocean, remains undaunted.

(Repeats mantra to herself- Dreams get you started. Discipline keeps you going.)

Every time I see a little orange blob on my KDP sales report, my heart swells with pride.

Out of a choice of 7.5M available titles, someone chose one of mine!

Let me ask you in general terms – how often do you leave a review of a book you’ve read and enjoyed?

Each review and those twinkling stars that go with them are the indie author equivalent of throwing another hefty log onto the creative fire.

The very fact that not only did someone choose one of my books to invest their hard earned cash on, they also came back at a later date to say a few kind words about it.

That blows my mind!

At present, all five of my book babies are sitting proudly on Amazon.co.uk with 5* ratings overall.

To me, that’s huge! It’s a real dreams come true sight and something I am very proud to have achieved.

So back to the earlier question, how do you become an indie author? How do you actually do it?

Well, I guess you have to have a story to tell that you believe in and are passionate about.

Tell that story your own way. There are no hard and fast rules here. Write it out long hand (I do). Type it straight to Word. Do whatever works for you as an individual but tell your story your way.

Once you have that vital first draft of your book, proofread, spell check, grammar check and edit until you are sick of the sight of your own words. This is where my Infamous 5 are invaluable. I share my story with them in chunks and, in return, they offer honest critical feedback, pick up on any grammar errors, pick up on anything too Scottish in the wrong setting and spot any spelling/typing faux pas.

Before I hit “publish” on a new novel, I’ve read it at least six times from start to finish and that does not include writing it in the first instance.

Then it needs a cover before you can set it free. You can’t send your book baby out into the world naked!

Personally, I prefer quite simple eye-catching covers. No more than three things within the image to catch the attention of potential readers as they scroll through Amazon’s recommendations.

I also create my own to save costs. (I was helped out on the first one by my Rock Fairy Godmother who then taught me how to do it myself on the second one.) I’ll be honest here – Photoshop and I enjoy a love/hate relationship!

It takes a lot of time, a lot of patience and a lot of self-discipline to get a book over the line.

If this all sounds like a lot of hard work for most likely very little financial reward then you’d be right.

The key thing about us indie authors is we do it for the love of sharing our stories with you.

If you feel like sharing some love for this indie author, please take a moment to check out my books on Amazon
