Beginnings – release day!

Today’s the day!

I’m delighted to introduce you to my first poetry collection. Yes, it’s a change of direction but each of these was written with just as much if not more emotion than my other book babies.

This is a collection of 45 short poems each written straight from the heart.

Why not check it out today (I promise its not like poems that you studied at high school!)

Beginnings….one week to go

My first collection of poems, Beginnings, will be published on 29 February 2024. This is a collection of poems that I have written over many years.  Many of them have appeared on my blog over the past ten years. Now felt like the right time to bring them all together in one small volume. (And of course, 29th February is too unique a date not to publish on – Yes, I’m weird about dates)

Beginnings is now available for pre-order worldwide for Kindle. Here’s the links

There will be a paperback edition available from 29 February too.

As a little taster, here’s one of the poems, a haiku, that appears in the book.

Icy east wind blows.

Sun shines on the rutted path.

Spring lies just beyond.

The cover photograph is one of my own. (Local friends may well recognise this spot.) It’s a small stand of trees just to the west of Lunderston Bay, my favourite meandering spot. There’s a certain peace to be found among those trees. A beautiful spot to simply stop and connect with nature.

To me, this year is all about Beginnings in so many ways.

For those who are eagerly awaiting news of Book Baby 8, please bear with me a little longer. It’s coming.

Beginnings…an explanation

It’s now been a few days since I surprised the world by announcing the release of my first collection of poems.

Huge thanks to those who have already pre-ordered.

To those who may have been a little disappointed that it wasn’t a new novel that I was releasing, I humbly apologise and beg that you are patient with me a little longer.

I’m going to make myself vulnerable here and explain the background to Beginnings. Since last summer, when the Big Green Gummi Bear’s health began to decline, I have struggled with writing Book Baby 8. The creative juices just weren’t flowing and the creative fire became dull embers. My original plan had been that it would be Book Baby 8 that was released on 29th February 2024 but that wasn’t to be. My creative muses apparently had a different plan.

I parked Book Baby 8 for a few weeks late last summer then decided to type up what I had written and see if that triggered a fresh burst of creativity. So for several weeks I typed…. in fact I have over 30 000 words typed up. This helped me to re-connect with the tale but things with the Big Green Gummi Bear weren’t good and the real world had to be prioritised over my creative one for obvious reasons. Family had to come first.

At the start of December 2023 I picked up my pen again and began to make some progress once more….then Christmas hit…. and I stopped again…paused not stopped.

I had signed up to take part in Beth Kempton’s online Winter Writing Sanctuary over the latter part of the festive period. It’s a beautifully gentle way to stoke the creative fires. This year though the sparks it ignited were poetic ones and almost on a whim, I decided at the end of December that I would still self-publish on 29th February 2024 but it would be a collection of poems not prose. Cue a flurry of reviewing over 30 years worth of poems and deciding which ones to include and which to save for another day. Within two weeks, I had the project typed up, formatted, the cover designed ( the photo is one of my own so no licencing issues) and the paperback proof ordered. The speed that this project came together with was scary!

The plans are now all in place. Beginnings will be set free into the world on 29 February 2024.

The creative fires are gradually building and its time once more to pick up my pen and return to Book Baby 8. I might actually treat myself to a new pen in the hope that the words flow easier from it. (Weird writer quirk…just humour me on that)

With a bit of luck and a lot of self-discipline, I will have Book Baby 8 ready to release later this year. Wish me luck!

An Inspirational Book Launch….. my first actual book launch.

Recently I received an invitation to a book launch.

Despite having self-published my book babies and contributed to several poetry anthologies in the past, I’d never actually been to a book launch.

Let me back track slightly here though….

Several months ago, I received an email at work looking for people to submit poems to a local charity to be compiled into a book that would be sold to raise funds.

I duly trawled through my two poetry notebooks (I don’t write that many poems), selected two that I felt fitted the bill and sent them off then I heard nothing for months……

Out of the blue a few weeks ago, an email arrived to say that both poems had been chosen to be included in the book.

Cue invitation to the book launch!

So, who are Mind Mosaic?

Mind Mosaic Counselling and Therapy are a local charity funded mental health organisation offering individual counselling and therapy sessions to adults, teenagers and children. They run group sessions and also offer training. Mind Mosaic have been in existence since 2012 and have grown steadily over the years….and they continue to grow.

Girl Child agreed to be my chaperone for the evening, neither of us too sure what format the event was going to take.

As the invitation says, the book launch was held in the function suite at the local arts centre, The Beacon Arts Centre.

For two hours we were treated to an evening of poetry and music to launch the book, Inspirational Poetry.

The book comprises of 42 poems by 23 different “poets”, local people who have been brave enough to make themselves vulnerable by sharing their heartfelt words.  The theme of the book is mental health awareness and the poems cover a diverse range of aspects of this. Each poem is accompanied by a photograph,

As the editor of the book, Johnny Woods, commented, it’s two books in one. It’s a photography book with poems and a poetry anthology with photos.

Personally, I felt the first hour of the launch was a little intense as the poems that were read from the book centred around bereavement, loss and depression. Local musicians, Yvonne and David Lyon, lightened the mood with a short set of folk influenced music though. Fabulous!

After a brief interlude for tea and coffee, proceedings took on a more uplifting vibe. Yvonne and David returned to the stage to perform another short set. (Yvonne – loved the song about the little angel. Could visualise it in my mind’s eye.)

Three further speakers recited some of the more uplifting and motivational poems from the book.

And then, with a vote of thanks, it was all over.

So, what did I contribute to the book?

These…

A Teenager’s Bleak Despair

I stare into a bleak world of despair

Easy to be drawn into its depths.

Voices echo inside my head.

Their cries fill the void.

My mum hates me,

Wishes I’d never been born.

My grandparents loathe me,

I’m letting them down.

My peers despise me,

I’m not from this town.

A mirror appears from the dark.

My haunted face stares back.

A light shines from behind

Clear and golden and bright.

Still the darkness draws me in.

Hidden From Prying Eyes

Deep inside me

Hidden from prying eyes

Hides me.

The public me

Paints on the smile

And glides through the working day.

The mummy me

Offers cuddles and hugs

Showering my children in unconditional love.

The friend me

Is calm and loyal

Always there to support and assist

The real me

Stays hidden

Quiet emotional

Nervous and scared

Frightened she’s found by prying eyes.
