Ten Years Ago Today The Creative Journey Began…

Ten years ago this week, I stopped at the local mall on my way back from work and bought a new A4 notebook and some pens.

Ten years ago today, I sat down on my front doorstep in the early evening sunshine with that notebook and one of the pens and began to write.

It would be weeks…months…before I told anybody what I was attempting to do.

At that time in my life, I knew I had to do something just for me and I decided, after a lot of soul searching, that the time felt right to put pen to paper once more.

As a child and a teenager, right into my twenties, I wrote. I wrote short stories, poems, even the first “book” but marriage and kids came along, and I put the lid back on my pen.

A series of events in both my work and my personal life took its toll on me emotionally, mentally, and physically and I recognised by early 2013 that I needed to do something just for me, something that gave me pleasure, something that relaxed me (that’s very hard to do) and something no one could take away from me.

What I sat down and began to write ten years ago today was what went on to become my debut novel, Stronger Within. The first book in the Silver Lake series. My first born “book baby.”

Now, I’ve written and blogged about this a few times over the years, so I’ll try not to repeat myself too much here.

Through losing myself in the pages of that notebook and countless others over the last ten years, I found myself too.

Writing is one of my key coping mechanisms in life. I journal extensively but writing my book babies is my escape from reality. Over the years, writing has become like oxygen to me. I need it to thrive!

Yes, there are days/evenings when my characters don’t want to play and that’s when I turn my attention to a short story or a poem or a piece of flash fiction.

There have been many occasions when I’ve read over the words that I wrote the night before and scored through them because I wasn’t happy with them.

I’m not a big planner, preferring to write from the heart and go with the flow. I always have key scenes in mind but there’s no detailed chapter plan (in fact splitting the tale into chapters is one of the last things I do), no storyboard, no character profiles. There are numerous post-its and scribbled notes and a handwritten calendar. This “pantser” approach did bite me with Book Baby 3, Bonded Souls, when I realised that I was too far through the timeline for one key scene. I wrote the scene and tried to slot it in where it was meant to be but that fundamentally didn’t work. There was no alternative…I scrapped circa 40k words and re-wrote it. Lesson learned!

Even with my current work in progress, Book Baby 8, I scrapped about 5k words and started it again.

I never actually “throw out” those scrapped words. I neatly put a line through them and start a fresh page.

I’ve kept every word I’ve written for the past 10 years and that includes blogs, short stories, gig reviews, poems…everything! That’s a lot of notebooks!

I’m not big on giving writing advice. Partly because I don’t feel qualified to do so and partly because if you are setting out on your creative journey, it’s YOUR journey so, explore and find your own path that suits your style and your story. Just because one approach works for me doesn’t mean it will work for you or anyone else. Trust in the story.

It’s been a surreal ten years. I can’t actually believe it has been ten years. Where did they go?

It’s also been an incredible ten years. I couldn’t have kept going without the encouragement, love, and support of a group of very special people. (You know who you are.)

My mantra has been a quote one of them shared on social media a long time ago.

Dreams get you started.

Discipline keeps you going.

And dreams do come true!

If you’d told me ten years ago as I sat on my front doorstep with that new notebook and pen that I’d see my name on the cover of a real book, that my words would earn five-star reviews on Amazon and that people from all over the world would read my books, I’d have laughed in total disbelief, but it’s happened…

If reading this is tempting you to pick up your own pen and start out on your own creative journey, DO IT!

There really is no feeling like making that dream come true.

Here’s to the next ten years and beyond!

What will you be reading with your coffee this weekend?

May I be so bold as to make a suggestion? ……

Throwback Thursday…..Stronger Within

Throwback Thursday…..

His inbox was crammed full of unread mails – most of which were advertising junk. Before this infuriated him further, he tweaked his junk mail filters, then returned to his inbox. There was one email from Maddy that caught his attention. The subject heading was “Silver Lake album and merchandising artwork.” He opened the message, scanning the details about a band meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss the attachments. Jake opened the first of four attachments to reveal the three draft designs for the album cover, each significantly different. Instantly his eyes were drawn to the distinctive signature on the drawings. He opened the other three attachments and found a variety of other designs tagged as t-shirt proposals and miscellaneous. One proposed album design caught his eye – a dragon, with its wings spread out nestled inside an intricate Celtic knot. The twist of its tail reminded him of the Celtic trinity that was in the band’s logo. When had Lori found time to complete this portfolio? Why hadn’t she told him? Suddenly, he desperately wanted to talk to her, but it was four o’clock in the morning. Smiling for the first time since Monday, Jake reached for his phone and turned it on. A barrage of text alerts pinged through – he ignored them for now. Quickly he typed, “Love the designs. Love the Celtic dragon knot. Love you. J x”. He hit send.

Love is in the air for FREE this Easter – Stronger Within FREE to download to kindle this weekend

Love is in the air for free this Easter weekend….

When she came out of the restaurant a few minutes later, Jake was standing waiting for her beside the truck. He was smiling and looked every inch the rock star with his tight black jeans, loose black shirt and long blonde hair. Everything about him was the polar opposite to her previous boyfriends. Well, it was time she had a bit of fun she guessed, as she reached the truck. As he lifted her up onto the seat, he leaned forward and kissed her gently on the forehead. She lifted her face and brushed a gentle kiss onto his cheek.

“Thanks for dinner.”

“Pleasure,” said Jake, closing the door gently.

Lori noticed the half full bottle of wine was sitting in the centre console storage box. She also caught sight of a guitar case behind the driver’s seat.

Throwback Thursday Free e-book: – Impossible Depths

Fancy spending the weekend at the beach with some hot rock stars for free? Yes?

Impossible Depths is FREE to download to kindle today. Here’s a short extract for you-

An early morning mist had rolled in off the ocean creating an eerie atmosphere along the beach. It had been early when Lori had crept out of the house to go for a walk. She did some of her best thinking alone down on the sand. Over the months her confidence and her physical strength had grown allowing her to walk along the shoreline without a constant nagging fear of falling. With the broad base plate attached, she still used her cane for support, psychological as much as physical. She had left Jake snoring loudly in bed, his long limbs spread out over more than his fair share of the mattress. When she had come down the hall, she had found Rich asleep on the lounge floor, his leather jacket serving as a blanket. The last two revellers hadn’t even made it indoors. Gary and Scott were dead to the world on the sun loungers outside. Someone had had the good sense to cover them with the fleecy blankets from the sun room. Images of the sleeping rock stars made her smile as she strolled along the sand. This early the beach was deserted, and the pockets of morning mist created her own small private thought bubbles.

The Silver Lake books go great with Christmas

As they walked along the snow-covered beach, Jake smiled. Watching the kids trying to run on ahead, occasionally throwing snowballs at each other and then lying down to make snow angels warmed his heart from the cold winter breeze that blew in off the ocean. With only two sleeps till Christmas both of them were hyper; both super excited at the thought of Santa Claus visiting.

“This way, kids!” he called as they reached a path that led up to the boardwalk.

Much to his surprise, they both came running towards him, slipping their tiny, gloved hands into his without being asked.

“What are you wanting Santa to bring you?” asked Melody as they walked along the boardwalk.

“Oh, I don’t know,” answered Jake, stalling for time. “Some new running shoes. Maybe a new guitar.”

“You’ve got lots of guitars!” stated Jesse bluntly.

“And you’ve got lots of trains, but you’ve still asked Santa Claus for another one,” teased Jake.

“I think Mommy wants a new computer,” announced Melody, changing the subject. “She was calling hers some bad words last week.”

With a laugh, Jake admitted that Lori had indeed called her laptop some choice names after it had crashed and deleted two days’ worth of work.

As the family group walked along the boardwalk, the kids ran on ahead to explore the small Christmas houses that had sprung up. The red Santa mailbox stood on the boardwalk opposite the bandstand.

Carefully, Jake removed the letters from his jacket pocket and handed them to the kids to mail. Pulling his cell out too, he took some photos of them posting the envelopes to Lapland then suggested that they go and stand by the town’s large Christmas tree for more photos.

“Ok, guys,” began Jake as he slipped the phone back into his jacket. “Who wants hot chocolate?”

“Me! Me! Me!”

Riley…..two weeks to go

Two weeks until release day….

The restaurant was busy but, when Jethro gave the hostess his name, they were led straight through to a table at the back of the room, affording them a little privacy. A few moments later, Riley became aware of a tall, slender woman with waist length rainbow coloured hair weaving her way through the table towards them.

“Jethro!” greeted the woman enthusiastically. “So sorry I’m late. Traffic out there is horrible. All snarled up.”

Standing to hug the new arrival, Jethro assured her, “It’s fine. We only just got here ourselves.”

Indicating that she should take the empty seat between them, Jethro said, “Riley, meet Molly. Molly, this is Riley.”

“Lovely to meet you at last, sweetie,” said Molly shaking Riley’s hand. “Sorry I missed your launch party last night. My flight from London was delayed. It was after midnight before I got in.”

“Nice to meet you too,” replied Riley shyly.

** note- this tale makes reference to self-harm**

Characters or Caricatures….you decide

I’m in this weird creative pre-book release space where I know I’m not quite finished with the current project but I’m itching to start the next one.

Riley is due to be released on 18th November 2022. Eek! The first physical proof copy is due to land this week so there’s still work to be done. (I swear commas move all by themselves!) but already my mind is wandering onto “What next?”

I have an idea … well, half an idea…but I’m not jinxing it by saying too much just yet.

I was flicking through my Continue the Story journal, contemplating using it as inspiration for this week’s blog when the above Ernest Hemingway quote jumped out at me.

I saw for a moment or two reflecting on the characters that I have introduced to the world and on the new “friends” that readers will meet in the pages of Riley.

Over the years several people have complimented me on my various characters and said that they feel as if they know them. A few have said how much they’d love to go to a Silver Lake concert or hear After Life’s music. Those are huge compliments for an author to receive. Well, they’re huge compliments to me.

So, how do you create a believable character? Where do you start to come up with a character that’s destined to become someone’s book boyfriend/girlfriend? (I hope!)

I’m sure there are hundreds of more successful authors than wee me who could wax lyrical on the subject but for me, the key is to give them personality traits and a past.

If we use Jake Power from the Silver Lake series as an example, he has a habit of being late, he runs his hand through his hair when he’s anxious and he takes sugar and cream in his coffee. As the story unfolds, the reader learns a little more about his past. The one thing that I’ve never written in great detail is a description of what Jake looks like. Yes, there are plenty of clues- long blonde hair, hazel eyes, tattoos- but the what Jake looks like is left to the reader’s imagination. I’m sure he looks subtly different to each reader.

Riley Johnson is a character who was never originally intended to be anything more than a minor character in Shattered Hearts, book four in the Silver Lake series. However, once she began to emerge on the pages, I knew there was another tale there waiting to be told. This young lady, this tiny green-haired girl, had more to say. Even if I do say so myself, she’s perhaps one of the best characters that I’ve created so far. You can judge for yourselves next month when the book’s released. (Hint… you can pre-order a kindle copy right now on Amazon worldwide.)

One other key component to my main characters in each of the books is that they aren’t perfect. Each of them has flows and that’s true of each and every one of us.

I love to read. I always have a book on the go, and I’ve read numerous rock star romance novels where the central characters are all about the sex drugs and rock’n’roll rather than the music and hard work and hours of rehearsal it took to put them on that stage. Never say never, but its not my intention to create those kind of rock stars. I hope to create musicians, the kind of genuine musicians that I love to watch play live on stage.

So, perhaps another key to creating characters who feel like real live people is observation. Authors are always watching, filing snippets of the real world away for use in a storyline someday. One of those moments finds its way into Riley. A small simple moment in time from a gig I was at one night. (I can’t now honestly recall which one). I was in my usual rail position watching the crew set up the stage between the support act and the headliners. One crew member brought out several bottles of water to position around the stage and was loosening the lids as he placed them strategically beside each band members’ spot on stage. A simple everyday act…then one bottle put up a fight. The top refused to budge! This poor guy was wrestling with it in front of the crowd before it finally surrendered and came loose. I almost gave him a round of applause.

In my humble opinion, its small observations like that that help to make a story more believable.

Riley sees me introduce several new characters- Jericho, Zed, Sam and JJ to name a few. Riley also sees the return of several familiar faces too. If you choose to pick up a copy of the book, I hope you enjoy meeting each and every one of them.
