Beach Time….

This year when it came to choosing a destination for my summer holiday (summer vacation) believe it or not, I did pause to think twice.

Should I go back?…

My heart screamed a resounding “YES!” so I listened to it.

As a result, at the end of last month, I found myself back in my “happy place”, walking through the pages of my Silver Lake books.

I returned to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in the USA.

Perhaps I am biased after all these years but there’s something magical about that small town. It’s some 45 years since it stole a piece of my heart as a 10-year-old.

When I saw the first road signs for Rehoboth Beach as I was driven down the Coastal Highway, my heart skipped a beat.

What if the magic was gone?…

I needn’t have worried. As soon as my toes sank into the soft warm sand, I knew I was back in the right place.

My soul sighed with contentment.

I spent 11 days soaking up the sun (and some thundery rain that soaked me to the skin), living and breathing the pages of my novels.

This year, as well as feeling as if I was walking through the lives of Jake and Lori, I also felt as if I was looking out for scenarios that the characters could naturally slot into.

**** slight spoiler alert ahead if you’ve not read all the books ****

When I was in the amusement arcades with my cousin and her young son, I could picture Jake there with his kids. I could almost see his patience being tested as Jesse played “the claw” machines, determined to win a certain plushie or more tickets.

On the beach one morning, I watched the lifeguards teaching the younger kids who had signed up for the Junior Lifeguard Program. Would that be something that Jake and Lori’s kids would want to do? Would they be encouraged to do it?

Watching the Rehoboth Beach Patrol lifeguards working, I wondered if Grey’s daughter, Becky, would enjoy a summer being a lifeguard or Melody perhaps. Were Grey or Rich or Paul or Jake lifeguards in their earlier lives?

The creative wheels began to turn…

All too soon it was time to say goodbye to my happy place.

Til next time, Rehoboth Beach.

Ten years ago today……

Ten years… a whole decade… since my first book baby, Stronger Within was published for Kindle. (The paperback edition followed a few weeks later)

It feels truly surreal that ten years have passed since that day.

I chose the date carefully. (I’m a bit weird about dates) The 15th April would have been my Wee Gran’s birthday. It was also the date that The Big Green Gummi Bear proposed to me. It was a date that felt as if it augured well.

In all honesty, I was absolutely petrified about self-publishing my first-born book baby. Was I about to make myself a laughingstock? What if no one bought it? What if everyone who did then hated it? What if they all thought it was rubbish? What if….

Looking back, it took me more personal courage than I knew I had to release that book, but I also knew that by taking the plunge that I was making my lifelong dream come true.

Ever since I had been a little girl, I’d dreamed of being an author one day and seeing my name on the cover of a book. I made that dream come true.

Stronger Within’s story began almost two years earlier on 8 May 2013 when I bought a notebook and pen on the way home from work then after dinner that evening, sat down on my front doorstep in the early evening sunshine and began to write. As I wrote page after page over the coming weeks and months, I had no idea that this story that I was writing was destined to become my first book.

One of my biggest fears, one that I have worked hard to conquer, is a crippling fear of letting people read what I write. It’s a terrible fear for an author to have! It was months before I told anyone about what I was attempting to do. Thanks to the belief that a few close friends had in me, I was persuaded to type the story up and share it with them. They loved it! Even the friend who on the face of things should have hated it, loved it. Their love and faith in my storytelling gave me the push I needed to venture into the world of self-publishing. It was a steep learning curve!

If you’d said to me on 15 April 2015 that ten years down the line, I’d have seven novels and a poetry anthology for sale worldwide via Amazon and that they’d all have multiple glowing reviews, I would never have believed you. I’d have thought you were insane to even think I could achieve that. Seven novels? Me? Never….

Yet here we are and that’s exactly what happened. My eighth novel is in the pipeline too. It still feels completely surreal…I am a published author who has sold books in several countries around the world!

Over the years people have asked me how I do it. I’ve been asked countless times about how I find the time to do it. I’ve been asked why I do it.

The how is that I sit down somewhere, whether that’s at my desk, or the picnic table or the doorstep with a notebook and a pen and I write the story one word after another.

The time I carve out to do something that I am passionate about. If you care enough about something you will always find time in your day to do it. Some days it’s a few hours and on others it’s a few minutes.

The why is a bit more complex to answer but the short version is that it gives me somewhere to escape to.

Writing to me is like oxygen. I can’t imagine a day without it in one form or other.

I’ve always said that if it ever begins to feel like work then that’s the day that I put the lid back on my pen, close over my notebook and put them down.

If you’ve spared some of your hard-earned pennies to purchase one of my books, I thank you.

If you’ve read it and then taken the time to leave me a review online, I thank you.

If you haven’t read any of them yet, then I’d encourage you to give one a try. You never know, you might enjoy it. Lots of other people have so far.

For me the end goal here isn’t to seek fame and fortune. (Ok a little bit of a fortune would be nice, I’ll not lie.) There are very few indie-authors who earn enough from their books to make a living. Without a word of a lie, at the time of writing this, my estimated royalties for the month are £1.56/$2.00 – not even enough to buy a cup of coffee. I write for the love of telling the story and if by telling that story I evoke an emotional reaction in my reader whether it be laughter or tears then my job is done.

They say everyone has a book in them so if you fancy finding the book in you, buy a notebook and a pen, find a sunny spot, sit down and begin to write. You never know where that dream will take you.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to each and every one of you who has supported my creative journey over the last ten years, especially to my Infamous Five.  I couldn’t do it without your love and support and belief in me.

Love n hugs

Flashback Friday….. Stronger Within

Flashback Friday….

She had just put the finishing touches to her makeup when she heard a truck crunch over the gravel in front of the house. By the time she had made her way down the hallway to the front door, Jake was already on the porch. His long hair was still damp – signs of a recent shower- and he too seemed to have taken care with his wardrobe. Behind him in the driveway she could see a black Dodge Ram pickup truck parked under the tree.

“Your chariot awaits,” he declared theatrically.

“Hi, Jake,” she smiled, stepping out onto the porch, pausing to pull the door closed behind her.

“Hi,” he replied. “Are you still ok with this?”

“Of course! I’ve been looking forward to it,” she said. “And to seeing you,” she added silently to herself.

“Ok. Let’s go then. The local metropolis awaits you.”

Getting into the passenger seat of the truck proved to be a challenge, but Jake swept in and lifted her up into the seat. He slid her crutches in behind then handed her the strap of the seatbelt.

“I hope you’re impressed. I even cleaned out the truck for you,” he said proudly. “It’s not usually so tidy.”

“I’m honoured. Thank you.”

As Jake turned on the ignition, the stereo burst into life and the cab was suddenly filled with very loud hard rock music. He reached to switch it off, but Lori stopped him.

“No worries. It’s fine with me,” she assured. “Is this the kind of stuff your band plays?”

“Yeah,” said Jake reversing out into the narrow road.

Memorial Day free e-book – Stronger Within

When she came out of the restaurant a few minutes later, Jake was standing waiting for her beside the truck. He was smiling and looked every inch the rock star with his tight black jeans, loose black shirt and long blonde hair. Everything about him was the polar opposite to her previous boyfriends. Well, it was time she had a bit of fun she guessed, as she reached the truck. As he lifted her up onto the seat, he leaned forward and kissed her gently on the forehead. She lifted her face and brushed a gentle kiss onto his cheek.

“Thanks for dinner.”

“Pleasure,” said Jake, closing the door gently.

Lori noticed the half full bottle of wine was sitting in the centre console storage box. She also caught sight of a guitar case behind the driver’s seat.

Happy reading 🙂

Happy Birthday to me….and you. Stronger Within is free to download today to celebrate.

The wine waiter approached with the two bottles she had selected from the list. Lori nodded her approval and asked him to pour. Once they all had a full glass, she proposed a toast, “To the success of Silver Lake”

“To rock’n’roll,” declared Paul theatrically.

“No,” corrected Jake warmly, “To Lori. Happy Birthday, Mz Hyde.”

She blushed, then added, “To health, wealth and happiness.”

While they waited for their starters to arrive, Becky produced a gift bag from beneath the table and gave it to Lori.

“It’s from all of us,” she said with a smile.

Lori carefully opened the small bag to reveal a long slim black jewellery box. She opened it to find a silver charm bracelet with three guitar charms, drumsticks and two music notes. It was perfect.

“Thank you,” she said softly. “Can one of you help me to put it on?”

Jake obliged by helping her with the catch before producing a second small gift bag, “And this is from me.”

Inside the bag she found a second small black box, squarer in shape. She opened it to find a delicate silver chain with a treble clef hanging from it. There was a small diamond in the tail of the treble clef.

“It’s perfect,” she whispered, kissing Jake on the cheek, “I love it.”

“Put it on, Lori,” squealed Becky, clapping her hands.

Again, Jake assisted her, kissing the nape of her neck as he fastened the clasp. “I’m glad you like it.”

“Thank you,” said Lori again. “I never expected presents. You’re all too kind.”

Throwback Thursday…..Stronger Within

Throwback Thursday…..

His inbox was crammed full of unread mails – most of which were advertising junk. Before this infuriated him further, he tweaked his junk mail filters, then returned to his inbox. There was one email from Maddy that caught his attention. The subject heading was “Silver Lake album and merchandising artwork.” He opened the message, scanning the details about a band meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss the attachments. Jake opened the first of four attachments to reveal the three draft designs for the album cover, each significantly different. Instantly his eyes were drawn to the distinctive signature on the drawings. He opened the other three attachments and found a variety of other designs tagged as t-shirt proposals and miscellaneous. One proposed album design caught his eye – a dragon, with its wings spread out nestled inside an intricate Celtic knot. The twist of its tail reminded him of the Celtic trinity that was in the band’s logo. When had Lori found time to complete this portfolio? Why hadn’t she told him? Suddenly, he desperately wanted to talk to her, but it was four o’clock in the morning. Smiling for the first time since Monday, Jake reached for his phone and turned it on. A barrage of text alerts pinged through – he ignored them for now. Quickly he typed, “Love the designs. Love the Celtic dragon knot. Love you. J x”. He hit send.

World Book Day 2023 – Your World Book Day

Today is World Book Day and this year’s theme is “Your World Book Day” with the aim to prove that books are inclusive and fun for all.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to grow up in a book filled world as I’ve mentioned before in this blog. There have always been books in my life from a book about Henny Penny when I was a toddler through all the usual childhood tales to the Virginia Andrews books of my early teenage years.

My kids were brought up in a book filled world too, including many of the same books although Henny Penny has been lost over the years. Both of them were in their late teens though before they really began to appreciate reading. Better late than never.

In my humble opinion, books are a personal thing- a personal choice. A bit like music, there’s no bad ones, only books that aren’t to your taste.

Much as I love reading, I hate being told to read a book. Recommend one to me by all means but don’t tell me to read it. My heels dig in and it puts me right off the book in question. This made English class in high school a bit of a challenge. I’ll confess, I rarely read the books we were told to read. I answered my O Grade English paper on a book I’d barely skimmed through. When I came to my Higher English, I knew I needed to knuckle down and actually read the prescribed text. It was book called Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, the first book of A Scot’s Quair. It’s written in broad Scots and isn’t the easiest read for anyone, never mind a stubborn 16-year-old.  I actually bought a copy years later on a whim thinking I’d read the remaining books…hasn’t happened yet.

I “bribed” myself into reading Sunset Song. Every Friday evening, I would shut myself away in the family lounge room for an hour or so, play my records and read at least one chapter of the book. I really had to force myself to read the damn thing! Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet album will be forever associated with that book!

Over the years there have been many memorable reads for many different reasons. Some of those I still associate with specific times or places. I link Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil by John Berendt (a great book!) with my honeymoon in Mauritius many many years ago.

My bookshelves are an eclectic mix as I do tend to read a wide variety of genres and authors. My kindle is overflowing with unread books (more than 100 the last time I checked). For the past few years, I have consciously been reading books, mainly e-books,  by fellow indie authors. There are so many talented indie authors out there waiting to read, reviewed and shared.

Out of all the hundreds, probably thousands, of books I’ve read over the years, there is one that will forever hold a very special place in my heart and on my bookshelf, where it nestles with its siblings, and that is Stronger Within, the first book I wrote and finally self-published in 2015.

That book has taught me so much on so many levels since the very first evening when I sat down on my doorstep with my new notebook and pen and began to write. The first step in a dream come true moment.

Not every book is for everyone but I firmly believe that there is a book out there for everyone. You just need to search for it.

Happy searching and happy reading.

Fancy a free e-book for the weekend? How about Stronger Within?
