Throwback Thursday…..Stronger Within

Throwback Thursday…..

His inbox was crammed full of unread mails – most of which were advertising junk. Before this infuriated him further, he tweaked his junk mail filters, then returned to his inbox. There was one email from Maddy that caught his attention. The subject heading was “Silver Lake album and merchandising artwork.” He opened the message, scanning the details about a band meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss the attachments. Jake opened the first of four attachments to reveal the three draft designs for the album cover, each significantly different. Instantly his eyes were drawn to the distinctive signature on the drawings. He opened the other three attachments and found a variety of other designs tagged as t-shirt proposals and miscellaneous. One proposed album design caught his eye – a dragon, with its wings spread out nestled inside an intricate Celtic knot. The twist of its tail reminded him of the Celtic trinity that was in the band’s logo. When had Lori found time to complete this portfolio? Why hadn’t she told him? Suddenly, he desperately wanted to talk to her, but it was four o’clock in the morning. Smiling for the first time since Monday, Jake reached for his phone and turned it on. A barrage of text alerts pinged through – he ignored them for now. Quickly he typed, “Love the designs. Love the Celtic dragon knot. Love you. J x”. He hit send.

From the Measly Jar of Motivation- Free of Sorrow (flash fiction)

And the prompts were-

A LOUD noise! An explosion? The walls all falling in. Ceilings cascading downwards. Screams. Whimpers. Crying. Cold. Darkness …then silence. Trapped in a tiny space, she curled up and closed her eyes.

She lay there for what felt like an eternity. Her stomach growled with pangs of hunger. She was thirsty and longed for a cool drink.

She was scared. Alone and trapped and scared.

Just as she was losing all hope, she heard voices. Strangers’ voices, not the familiar voices of her family. Where were her family?

Suddenly, she was blinded by light as the piece of rubble above her was lifted away. Shaking with fear, she closed her eyes, whimpering quietly.

“It’s ok. I’ve got you,” said a man’s voice as he scooped her up into his arms.

She felt the stranger gently checking her over for injuries then he carried her away from the remains of the only home she’d known. He gave her a few drops of water from a bottle.

“What you got there?” another unfamiliar voice asked the man.

“The only survivor,” replied the stranger who carried her. “Pup. Can’t be more than four or five months.”

“What you going to do with it?”

Gazing down at the scared brown eyes staring up at him, he replied, “Clear it with the boss and take her home.”

She felt his warmth seep into her tiny thin body as he carried her away from the bomb site. A few moments later, he shifted his hold on her then he was placing her inside something. He took off his jacket, laid it out then sat her down in the middle of it. Already his scent was becoming familiar and felt reassuring to her senses.

“Wait there. I’ll be back soon, princess,” he promised as he closed the car door. “Need to speak to the boss before we head home.”

She must have dozed off as the vibration of the car and its motion wakened her. Looking up, she could see her rescuer in the seat next to her.

“One stop to make then we’ll get you home, princess,” he explained softly. “Need to pick up a few supplies for you at the pet store.”

Home…that suddenly sounded good.

Home was a fourth-floor apartment overlooking the river. When he carried her into the apartment, he took her straight into the kitchen and fetched her a bowl of water. She began to lap at the cold water thirstily.

“Slowly, girl,” he cautioned, stroking her head. “You don’t want to make yourself sick now, do you?”

She paused to stare up at him then watched as he scooped some dog food into a shallow dish before setting it down in front of her. It had been such a long time since she’d eaten…

The bowl was licked clean in seconds.

“Bath time.”

She stared at him with her big brown eyes but allowed herself to be scooped up again into his arms. He carried her down the hallway to the bathroom and placed her into the bathtub. Carefully, he washed all the dust and dirt from her soft brown and white coat. Satisfied that she was clean, he drained the murky water from the bath, letting her shake herself dry before he wrapped her in a warm fluffy towel.

Once she was dry, he took her back through to the kitchen then let her explore the long narrow room while he cooked his own evening meal. Just as she had done in her old home, she sat at his feet while he ate, hoping for a titbit or two. Her ploy worked.

Hours later, as she lay curled beside him on the couch, a new red collar round her neck, she realised that she wasn’t scared any more. She was free of sorrow.

Her ordeal was over. She had a new master now instead of her mistress. He seemed gentler than the little girl who had been her previous owner. He hadn’t pulled her ears or tail once.

As he dozed off on the couch, worn out from several long days of digging through the rubble day and night, she snuggled in beside him. Now felt like a time for being safe. A time to get settled into her new forever home.

Trust (an acrostic poem)

Trust should be cherished, never taken for granted.

Respect has to be earned then sustained.

Use your judgement wisely- once gone, they’re gone forever.

Spend a few extra moments in contemplation….

Think about the cost of blowing apart either or both…

Flashback Friday – Have you met Ellen?

“It’s fine, Rocky,” said Ellen, praying she sounded calmer than she felt. “Luke, I’ll make a deal with you. One error and I’m gone. One from you and the result’s the same. You go.”

My inner child is happily intact

Sometimes you just need to channel your inner child.

I’ve obviously been watching too much Jade Fever on a Sunday morning. (Well, there’s been no MotoGP all winter to keep me amused.) Genuinely, I don’t watch much TV but I do like to watch something while I’m ironing on a Sunday morning. A while back I stumbled across Jade Fever and curiosity got the better of me. How do you mine jade?

Crystals/gemstones are something that I am interested in and I have a growing collection. It was only natural to be curious about where they come from

(For the equally curious among you- Huge Jade Lens Is A Challenge To Cut | Jade Fever – YouTube)

Anyways…I digress slightly. For Mother’s Day recently, my Boy Child bought me a “gemstone dig kit”. (He also got me a gold panning kit complete with fool’s gold. – Ok I may also have been watching Yukon Gold after Jade Fever on a Sunday morning.)

I was way too excited about my dig kit!

The day after Mother’s Day was a miserable wet Monday. It had been a long day logged into work. The rainy weather had put paid to all thoughts of going for a meander after work. To be honest, I was more than a little fed up then I remembered my dig kit.

Time to get mining!

I cleared my desk and set up my dig kit, complete with my brick to be mined. There were some plastic tools provided in the kit- a double ended excavation tool, a brush and a magnifying glass.

I started to dig, trying not to get chalky dust everywhere. That brick was harder than it looked!

A few minutes later I uncovered the edge of my first gemstone. I was like a kid on Christmas morning! I’d found one!

Digging out the slender piece of clear quartz didn’t take too long.

One down, two to go.

I dug more towards the middle of the brick and finally uncovered a small brown edge. I’d found my second gemstone!

This one was larger and buried deeper in the brick. I kept digging. Eventually, the beautiful piece of Tiger’s Eye came loose. Very pretty.

Two down, one to go.

I moved my dig site to the right and sure enough, a few minutes later, I unearthed a small purple edge of a piece of amethyst.

It took a bit of digging out as I happily hacked away at the chalky brick with my plastic pickaxe thing. Finally, the crystal came free.

All in all, it took me about thirty minutes to dig the three gemstones out.

Half an hour where I was channelling my inner child and the real world ceased to exist.

Innocent carefree fun and I enjoyed every second of it.

Next rainy Monday, you’ll find me and my inner child panning for fool’s gold.

Love is in the air for FREE this Easter – Stronger Within FREE to download to kindle this weekend

Love is in the air for free this Easter weekend….

When she came out of the restaurant a few minutes later, Jake was standing waiting for her beside the truck. He was smiling and looked every inch the rock star with his tight black jeans, loose black shirt and long blonde hair. Everything about him was the polar opposite to her previous boyfriends. Well, it was time she had a bit of fun she guessed, as she reached the truck. As he lifted her up onto the seat, he leaned forward and kissed her gently on the forehead. She lifted her face and brushed a gentle kiss onto his cheek.

“Thanks for dinner.”

“Pleasure,” said Jake, closing the door gently.

Lori noticed the half full bottle of wine was sitting in the centre console storage box. She also caught sight of a guitar case behind the driver’s seat.

What’s your guilty pleasure song?

A couple of weeks back, as part of a team fun Friday thing, I was asked to name my “guilty pleasure” song.

Many of you who read this blog regularly will know that I love listening to music. There’s always music playing while I’m working or writing. It’s playing right now as I type this. I love going to gigs. Love being on the rail watching the band on stage. I also admin a successful FB fan page supporting one of my musical heroes. My days and evenings are music fuelled.

So, asking me to pick one song is almost as hard as asking me to pick a favourite book.

And the “guilty pleasure” bit threw me somewhat.

I Googled “guilty pleasure”-

“something such as a film, television programme or piece of music that one enjoys despite

feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.”

This definition threw me a bit too.

Music is a matter of personal taste. Yes, there will be songs/genres of music that a person prefers over others but it doesn’t mean everything else isn’t great too. It just suggests that its not pleasing to your ears and not to your taste.

It’s that mindset that led me to develop my Thumper Principle when writing gig reviews. “If ya can’t say nothin’ nice, don’t say nothin’ at all.”

So, what then would I class as my “guilty pleasure” song?

The question was still bugging me.

I never ever feel guilty about listening to music I enjoy. No one should feel guilty about liking the songs they turn to.

I pondered the question some more…then decided to turn it on its head slightly.

I chose a song that never fails to make me smile. There’s nothing guilty about it but it does lift my spirits and bring a few minutes of pleasure to the day every time I hear it.

Friday arrived and the team quiz was to match the song to the person. I sat quietly on my zoom screen and took the playful teasing about “I bet Coral has picked some obscure rock band non one’s heard of” in the spirit in which it was intended.

True, I primarily listen to rock music but as I said at the start, I love music. I listen to music of many different genres. I grew up in a house  that was filled with a mix of Scottish and Irish folk music, rock’n’roll, Elvis and songs from musicals. Believe it or not, I actually have a fairly  eclectic taste in music but freely admit to my love of hard/heavy rock music.

So, what song did I choose?

This one….

“Ain’t Nothin’ Like”-Brad Paisley Music Video – YouTube

I chose Ain’t Nothin’ Like by country star Brad Paisley.

A country song? Why?

For the simple reason that the imagery in that song makes me smile every time. I love the lyrics-

“Ain’t nothin’ like watchin’ a bunch of young ‘uns run screamin’ through the sprinkler in

        their little bare feet.

And ain’t nothin’ like finding twenty dollars in the pocket of the britches that you wore last

        week.”

I first heard the song on a music tv channel a long time ago when I was holiday in the States. Hearing the song reminds me of happy times. The song reminds me of running through the spray from an open fire hydrant on the 4th July in Philadelphia. Happy days….

Not surprisingly, no one guessed that that was my song choice.

So, what would your “guilty pleasure” song choice be?
