I spy chimps….lots of chimps!

The weekend before last the Big Green Gummi Bear and I were in London for a few days. We were staying near London Bridge and on the Saturday morning as we set out from the hotel in search of breakfast, I spotted this statue next to the hotel.

I love chimps!

Next morning, while the Big Green Gummi Bear was pounding the streets of London along with 42000 other people, I went for a wander down behind the hotel towards Tower Bridge to take some photos. Much to my great surprise, I found a few more friends.

Later in the day as we walked along the south bank past HMS Belfast and Hays Galleria, I found a few more.

So why all the chimps?

Cue a Google search when we got home.

These statues form part of the Chimps Are Family public art trail in support of conservation projects. There are 18 statues (28 chimps) in total hidden/placed in and around the London Bridge and Tower Bridge area on the south bank of the River Thames. They can be found there until 21 October 2022.

The sculptures showcase different behaviours and emotions that we humans also display e.g., love, grief, friendship, play. The similarities aren’t really so surprising when you consider that we share 98% of our DNA with these wonderful beings.

My only regret is that I failed to find all 18. (In my defence, I didn’t know at the time that there were 18 of them or I would have made the effort to look harder.)

If you happen to be in the area before 21 October and fancy seeking these wee guys out, here’s a map to help you.

Have fun searching them out!

Riley…coming 18 November 2022- have you pre-ordered your copy yet?

“I have one last song for you,” began Riley. “I hope you’ve enjoyed yourselves tonight. I’d like to say a few thank yous. Huge thanks to Dr Marrs, to the guys from Silver Lake, to my record label, to each and every one of you for making tonight magical. This really is a dream come true. A Firefly Dream. I have one final extra special huge thank you for Garrett for hosting this party and for giving me a chance, a job and a home. Garrett, I love you.”

As the cheers died out, Riley continued, “This last song was inspired in this very place. I’d never seen a real four-poster bed before Garrett invited me to stay here. You can work out the rest of the story. Folks, it’s been amazing. I’m going to leave you with Jumping On The Bed.”

The light-hearted song was the perfect choice to end the show with and left everyone in a buoyant mood as the lights came back up and the caterers began to circulate with trays of drinks and canapes. Not quite sure what to do, Riley stayed in the alcove tidying up her guitars and her lyrics folder. Suddenly, she felt two strong arms wrap round her. The hint of a familiar exotic spicy aftershave tickled her nose. Without a second’s thought, she spun round and wrapped herself round Todd.

“You were sensational, girl!” he declared before kissing the top of her head. “Awesome set.”

“Thank you,” said Riley, snuggling in close.

Introducing Colin Ginn

This week I’d like to introduce you to another fellow indie author, Colin Ginn.

Colin’s just released Rose, book three in The Flower Girls series.  Before we chat to the man himself, here’s an excerpt from Rose

Suddenly I awake from my recurring nightmare, the nightmare that has been haunting my existence for over three years now. The sweat is pouring from every pour of my shaking body. Today this nightmare has taken more out of me than normal. After ten minutes of being woken with the force of a freight train my eyes are just becoming accustomed to the sharp early dawn light cascading through the parting in my bedroom curtains, knowing this is the last time I will wake up in here. My eye’s weep as I look towards the photo on my bedside table, “mumma I’m sorry I’ve lost your beautiful house, this house all because I didn’t listen to your all-knowing advice”.

Leaning over I pick up the photo and kiss the picture of my mumma holding the magazine with my first cover shot on it. The tears are streaming down my cheeks running down the silver frame as my tears drop from my chin. My finger gently wipes the tears from her face and I kiss the photo as I have done every day since my darling protector passed.

I finally get up carefully packing the photo in my case, not knowing when or where I will be placing it by my bed again. After a long cold shower, I get dry and take the carton of milk and give it a sniff. “No, I don’t think so”. Instead, I go for the warm orange juice sitting next to the remaining content of my fridge that was taken away yesterday. The Russian bastards took everything that wasn’t in my bedroom. They are coming back for what’s left today together with the keys of the house my mother left me in her will.

Sitting naked crossing my legs as my bum makes contact with the floor. Again, I go over and over the paperwork from the court house taking my mumma’s house as part payment for the debt my no good ex husband run up in my name over three years ago. Now all the hardache of what that piece of shit has taken from me comes flooding back.

It’s been nearly three years since my modeling career came to an abrupt halt. I remember when my face was on the front cover of all the major mags, I went to all the best parties and restaurants where I ate some amazing food and lived in a wonderful apartment in New York overlooking Central Park, and I didn’t get out of bed for less than fifteen thousand dollars a day. That all ended when my ex shit of husband Jack, gambled it all away and some. All of his debts, my dear husband Jack the bastard secured with my earnings and my property which against my mums advice was unprotected by not having a pre-wedding agreement.

Jack was not only my arsehole of a husband and Lawyer he was also my manager. When he got involved with a gambling syndicate run by what now turns out to be Russian Mafia, I unknowingly secured his debts by signing the papers he constantly put in front of me. When he ran out of money, they didn’t threaten him, they went straight for my assets legally through the courts and got everything I had and more. They even got my name Jane Roseanne Beckett as it is registered as part of my assets, I had my name copyrighted and the court handed it over to them. My lawyer did get the Judge to agree I could have full copyright of my name back once the entire debt was paid off. The Russaian’s or I should say their fucking layers persuaded the Judge to also stop me from modeling or being published until the debt, yes you guest it until it is paid in full.

The court did agree that I could change my name to Rosanne Manford, Manford being my momma’s maidan name. But did not agree to me still working as a model even though it would have been the easiest way for the debt to be paid. The Judge said that it should a warning to anyone in the public eye that all debts have to be paid no matter who you are. Which I thought was a bit harsh of him especially when it was my shit face husband that had run up the debt.

So there I was no money, no home and no Job and that’s when mumma gave me a life line allowing me to move back home, for two years I worked waiting tables sometimes getting noticed as the model who gambled all her money away. Slowly changing my image to blend in, turning into long haired brunette from short blonde hair did make a difference but not as much as the grungy ill-fitting clothes and hoodies that covers my curves and face, turning me into an unknown plain Jane.

Mumma supported me while all of my earnings from waiting tables and the other part time jobs I managed to get from time to time went to pay the Russian bastards who knocked on the door each week, holding their hand out and reminding me with laughter in their voices how much was left to pay off. Even on the day of mumma’s death six weeks ago the bastards demanded my wages, then two weeks ago at the reading of her will they produced a court order taking my mumma’s house and contents that she lovenly bequeathed to me, giving me two weeks to find somewhere to live. Which I have have not managed to do with the available funds I have.

Yesterday the day before I am being forced to leave my home, I get a phone call from my lawyer Mr William Slade Snr saying he has been contacted by the consortium that Jack’s debt or should I say my debt is owed, with what he is saying is good news. I have been offered a two-year contract to work for them at the Blue Lotus Club as a hostess. He has looked over the contract and in his words it he would recommend that I consider taking it, accommodation, food and a small wage has been offered and after the two-year contract has ended, I would be free of my debt to them and would be able to use my name again. I have been invited to attend the Blue Lotus Club at 3pm today, Mr Slade is going to meet me there to go through the contract with me and introduce me to potentially my new boss.

Hi, Colin. A warm welcome to my blog. Tell me a bit about yourself. Have you always wanted to be a writer?

First if you don’t already know I am a Bedfordain, I was born and apart from the odd holiday have lived my entire life in Bedford England. I have reached that age where my options flow freely and I have no worries who I tell them too. I’ve been described as fun laid back (horizontal) English Gentlemen, so I will go with that. Have always wanted to be a writer, well not really it was a scribble on a bucket list I wrote many, many years ago. Write and publish a book.

What can you tell me about your latest release, without giving away any spoilers?

Rose was the story I started to write with the intention for it to be the first in the Flower Girls series. After getting about three quarters of my way through it I thought I hadn’t given any thought to how the Blue Lotus Club came about, so I placed Rose back into the vase so to speak to write Grand Opening and Defaulters at Ten. What I will tell you about Rose is she was Supermodel before her now ex husband gambled away every penny she had, and she had a lot of pennies. Now her debt is being paid back in a more unconventional way.

Which of your characters do you like most? Why?

Well to be honest I love them all but if I am being forced to choose from my babies it would have to be Honeysuckle. She has that, well you know when you meet someone for the first time, and you say to yourself I really like you. Honeysuckle is that person not only that she is an absolute beauty with love and affection for everyone, you are going to love her.

Is there one particular person who inspired you to write?

Jessica Gomez another independent who I met on Facebook when she was promoting her first release. Over time we became friends and as things got moving for her, she asked me to become her PA. She really did inspire and light up my now passion for writing.

A cruel question, but what’s your favourite book/who’s your favourite author?

Not cruel at all I have to go back to the classic that was the first book I read from cover to cover. Moby-Dick by Herman Melville.

Tell me a bit about your approach to your writing. Are you a meticulous planner or do you tend towards letting your characters go with the flow?

My planning is like taking a packet of seeds throwing them up in the air and see what grows. What happens is like Rose I start a story then follow another storyline into another story getting back to it when it fits back into the timeline. It’s really like writing in the TARDIS.

I love to write outdoors. Where’s your favourite place to write?

I write on my Tablet while I’m sitting on my setee in my front room.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Well I don’t know whether it’s advice or not I was told never to give in- keep going.

What advice would you give to other aspiring authors out there?

Apart from don’t give up, I would say never compromise on the story you want to write, nobody

knows what ideas are rattling around in your head and you need to get them on paper in the

way you alone want to read your story. Always write for yourself first.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

I must say I don’t get writers block, what I do get a sense of fear I won’t be able to get something

written down before I forget it.

So, what’s next creatively? Are you working on anything else just now?

The Flower Girls series is continuing, but what is exciting is I am currently writing a murder

mystery something which is not easy for me and requires me to adopt completely different

mindset.

Now for a bit of fun:

Favourite food Steak and Kidney Pudding

Favourite drink Brandy

Favourite Band Queen but to be honest, the best artists I have seen live are Neil Diamond and Cliff Richard.

Favourite holiday destination  Venice Italy

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why? Mind reading, I really want to

know what people are thinking

I’d like to thank Colin for taking time out of his busy day to chat. It’s much appreciated.

Introducing indie author Lisa Sell

This week I’d like to introduce you to fellow indie author, Lisa Sell, who has recently released her fourth novel, Killing Kindness.

Before we meet Lisa herself, here’s a taste of Killing Kindness

Killing Kindness Chapter One

Three long, hot weeks ended in death. Teenage temperaments boiled over. Humidity slicked their skin with sweat. Blaming the heat for the group falling apart was too convenient. More than mugginess made Simon Pritchard snap.

The Six were united in a common purpose. Every summer holiday, activities took place, giving parents the chance to offload their offspring. Six sixteen-year-olds, fresh from finishing GCSEs, were the chosen ones. Selected teens earned cash helping to run Trillhaven’s holiday club alongside adult supervisors. The Six was hardly an inspired name, but the adults found it helped the assistants to bond. Being in a group made them feel elite. Those only a few years younger respected their authority.

Alex, Kat, Joe, Stevie, Erin, and Simon formed the gang of 1992. Kids hung around them, desperate to be a favourite. The adult helpers admired the teens’ work ethic while ignoring their night-time shenanigans. Young adults need to let loose, particularly when preparing for further education or work. A disused mill on the outskirts of Trillhaven became a playground. There they learnt how to tip from childhood over the cusp into adulthood. The Six discovered the joys of alcohol, accompanied by a love of music and sometimes each other. The owner of the mill watched from her cottage across the way. She stayed out of their business until she had no choice.

On the last evening of the holiday club, children danced to a DJ’s cheesy tunes. Nearly every local entertainment event was led by him. The Dorset town of Trillhaven lacked social opportunities. Everything was small, including the locals’ closed minds, overpopulated residential areas, and crammed schools. A blanket woven with community gossip and judgement spread wide over them all.

The pressure of small town life weighed on Simon. From experience, everyone expected him to be nice. If the dictionary had a visual representation of kindness, Simon’s photograph would be on display, not that he would’ve appreciated it. The young man hated his babyish face and impish grin. Sharper, more mature features might have allowed him to say no more often and for it to be accepted.

Simon’s friends believed his cup of kindness would always run over. That summer, they received it in abundance, until the boy broke. We all have darker natures we try to suppress. For a while, Simon kept his demons hidden.

Then came Friday 21 August 1992, when The Six disintegrated. Fights, betrayal, disappointment, and damning allegations signalled the end.

Kindness isn’t infinite. That night, Simon killed kindness. He might have murdered a man, too. Simon can’t tell anyone what happened. He was never seen again.

Intrigued? I am! (The link to purchase Killing Kindness is at the bottom)

Now to “meet” the lady herself.

Hi Lisa. Welcome. Tell me a bit about yourself. Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’m a British author who writes in the crime, mystery, and psychological thriller genres. My fourth book, Killing Kindness, has been recently released.

I’ve always loved books and reading, but never dared to think I could be a writer. I’ve studied literature to Masters level and was an English teacher, thinking I could teach writing rather than doing it.

What can you tell me about your latest release, without giving away any spoilers?

The blurb explains it the best. Goodness knows we work on these blurbs hard enough!

Summer 1992: The Six, a group of teenagers, met in a disused mill every night. They thought they were invincible until Simon, a kind young man, disappeared.

Summer 2021: The Six – minus Simon – gather at the renovated mill for his memorial. The reunion begins and a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. The body count rises. Someone is killing kindness. It’s cruel to be kind…

Which of your characters do you like most? Why?

That’s like asking a parent to choose their favourite child! That said there are characters from each of my books I like the most.

In Hidden, I have a lot of affection for Claire. She’s outspoken but incredibly loyal to her friends and family.

In Trust, I admire Sarah for overcoming a troubled childhood to become a doctor and trying to trust people.

I don’t like The Watcher in my novel of the same title but I love how devious this character is. I love writing villains!

Killing Kindness doesn’t have a particular favourite character for me. I do like the group, The Six, though. I enjoyed taking them from being teenagers to adults.

Is there one particular person who inspired you to write?

I started to feel I might like to try writing a book. I happened to mention it to my husband but felt a little silly. He bought me a beautiful notebook and pen and told me to write. I didn’t need permission, but it felt like someone believed in me. So, I began.

A cruel question, but what’s your favourite book/who’s your favourite author?

Wuthering Heights is my favourite book. From the moment I began studying it at school I was transfixed. I love the depth of description and character. Never have I read a book that matches it in passion, violence, and deep emotions, along with stunning scenery.

Going to Haworth, seeing the parsonage, and walking the moors was such a joy.

Tell me a bit about your approach to your writing. Are you a meticulous planner or do you tend towards letting your characters go with the flow?

By nature, I’m an organised person so I’m a total planner. It seems many writers nowadays are ‘pantsers’; flying by the seat of their pants. I just can’t do it! I need a plan and it is detailed. I allow flexibility, though, for the extra inspiration that always comes as I’m writing.

I love to write outdoors. Where’s your favourite place to write?

I’m rather boring in that I need the discipline and routine of writing at my desk. It feels more like I’m settling down to write. I do get lots of writing ideas when I’m not at my desk, though. My phone is always full of notes!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Don’t write for publication. It will stifle your creativity and you won’t write the book that only you can write.

What advice would you give to other aspiring authors out there?

You’re only ‘aspiring’ if you don’t write a single word. The moment you write your first word, you’re a writer. Write. Learn about the craft by all means, but if you don’t write you can’t be an author. Sometimes we overcomplicate simple things.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

Thankfully, I’ve not had it for any length of time. I have days when I don’t feel up to writing. I rest because you have to give the mind space to refill.

Going for a walk, having a nap, watching TV, reading a book, many activities where I’m not forcing thinking can give my creative mind a jiggle.

I’m not of the school of thinking that you must write every day. For me, it’s a ‘rule’ I’ve never adhered to. It’s too prescriptive and doesn’t factor in things like illness, needing rest, mental illness, commitments, and things that crop up in everyday life.

So, what’s next creatively? Are you working on anything else just now?

I’ve got a couple of books in mind. No details at the moment!

Now, for a bit of fun:

Favourite food: Pasta

Favourite drink: Very boring – squash. I drink loads of it!

Favourite band: Too many to choose! I occasionally DJ so asking me to choose one band isn’t possible!

Favourite holiday destination: I went to Rome on my honeymoon and loved it. I’d like to explore more of Italy in the future.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why? Invisibility. Imagine all the things you’d see and hear! I could make mischief too.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to Lisa for taking time out of her schedule to talk to me this week. It’s much appreciated

Riley – still chasing my pre-order target

And so began several hours of poses, standing, sitting, solo, and together. After nearly three hours, Riley needed a moment or two to herself. Without a word, she wandered down to the water’s edge, stopping just out of reach of the gentle waves that were lapping ashore. Her toe caught something, and she bent down to investigate what it was. It was a small perfectly formed conch shell with stunning mother of pearl markings. Carefully, she rinsed it off in the shallows then slipped it into her jacket pocket, a souvenir of the day.

“Perfect,” declared Neil, appearing beside her. “Totally relaxed shots. Thank you, beautiful lady.”

“Sneaky,” laughed Riley. “I never knew you were there.”

“That’s the whole idea,” replied the photographer. “Your band are being herded back onto the bus, by the way.”

“Thanks. Guess I better say goodbye to the ocean.”

“Well, you’re taking a little piece home in your pocket,” observed Neil, referencing the shell. “If you’ve sand in your pocket, you’re never far from the shore.”

“Ain’t that the truth.”

Once back on the bus, Riley sat up at the back on her own. She sifted through her large soft leather hobo bag until she found her lyrics journal, curled her feet up under her and began to scribble furiously. Every now and then she put her hand in her pocket and ran her fingers over the shell. Inspiration had struck when Neil said about taking a little piece of the beach home in her pocket.

Want to hook up with a hot rock star this weekend?

His inbox was crammed full of unread mails – most of which were advertising junk. Before this infuriated him further, he tweaked his junk mail filters, then returned to his inbox. There was one email from Maddy that caught his attention. The subject heading was “Silver Lake album and merchandising artwork.” He opened the message, scanning the details about a band meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss the attachments. Jake opened the first of four attachments to reveal the three draft designs for the album cover, each significantly different. Instantly his eyes were drawn to the distinctive signature on the drawings. He opened the other three attachments and found a variety of other designs tagged as t-shirt proposals and miscellaneous. One proposed album design caught his eye – a dragon, with its wings spread out nestled inside an intricate Celtic knot. The twist of its tail reminded him of the Celtic trinity that was in the band’s logo. When had Lori found time to complete this portfolio? Why hadn’t she told him? Suddenly, he desperately wanted to talk to her, but it was four o’clock in the morning. Smiling for the first time since Monday, Jake reached for his phone and turned it on. A barrage of text alerts pinged through – he ignored them for now. Quickly he typed, “Love the designs. Love the Celtic dragon knot. Love you. J x”. He hit send.

Around her the bedroom was lit by half a dozen candles, their shadows dancing on the walls. A delicate vanilla fragrance filled the room. The gothic palace lay silent. It was almost midnight. Sitting cross-legged in the middle of the large four-poster bed, Riley sat staring down at the CD in her hands. Her CD. Her debut album that was due to be released worldwide on the stroke of midnight.

A box of CDs had been delivered that morning with a note from the record company saying simply, “Autograph these in time for the launch party on February 29th.” She’d signed her way through two silver Sharpie markers before all the CD inserts were autographed. At Garrett’s suggestion, she’d practiced her autograph on a few sheets of paper before deciding how she wanted to sign it. Initially it had been fun sitting at Garrett’s huge rosewood dining table signing the insert for each disc but after the first fifty or so the novelty swiftly wore off. Two hours later she had finished the chore. All of the discs had been signed -all bar one. The one she held in her trembling hands.

Dreams can come true…

For the first time in a while someone left a review on Amazon last week of Book Baby 6 aka Long Shadows. Seeing those kind words and those 5 twinkling stars genuinely gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. It also caused me to pause and reflect on my creative journey so far.

It really doesn’t seem so long ago when I sat down on my front doorstep with my new notebook and new pen and began to write a story that went on to become my first novel, Stronger Within. As I wrote that night, the aim was just to write a story, to achieve something just for me. I wasn’t thinking about what it might go on to become. I was simply telling a story.

The first handwritten page of Stronger Within

Now when I look at it and its book baby siblings on Amazon and see those twinkling stars, I do finally feel proud of what I have achieved. Trust me, it took a long, long time to admit that I felt proud of myself.

Is it the best book in the world? Of course not!

Is it earning me a fortune? LOL—no! Monthly royalties from all of the books combined barely cover the cost of a cup of coffee from Starbucks.

If you think you’ll make your fortune from writing your novel, forget that notion right now. Writing is a labour of love and a burning desire to tell a story. It’s a passion. Yes, some indie authors do strike gold when their book babies land in the right lap at the right time but those are miracle moments, in my humble opinion…but all indie authors live in hope of miracles happening as well as dreams coming true.

Do I really want that fame and fortune? … if I’m being totally honest, there’s a bit of me that does to an extent, but I’d hate to lose my identity in the process. I’m quite content to just be me. It would be nice to walk into a book shop and see my books on the shelves among the other authors I admire … but I’d like to be able to do that and have no one recognise me.

Ok..feel like I’m waffling now! …or is it daydreaming?

Writing a book doesn’t just happen by magic. There’s more involved than the average reader could ever imagine. Getting that first story from the handwritten pages of my notebooks into a paperback novel and an ebook was a long hard slog and an exceptionally steep learning curve. I couldn’t have done it without the unwavering support of my Infamous Five (yes, you know who you are). Those five individuals have stuck by me on this journey and never for one second do I take that help and love and support for granted. Their support and faith in me, along with kind words in the various book reviews and kind words left on social media by others, really are what gets me through the low moments, the days when you can’t string two words together, the days when you are riddled with self-doubts…and for the past couple of years, the days themselves on occasion.

I’ve said this before, but one of those wonderful people shared a quote online years ago and this has become my mantra.

So, if you are reading this and swithering about whether to pick up your pen or sit down at your laptop and begin your own book baby or short story or poem or in fact anything creative at all, my advice is DO IT! You have nothing to lose and everything to achieve, including making that dream come true. The biggest thing that writing/creating costs you is your time. If you have the desire to chase that dream, then it is time well-spent, and you won’t mind putting in the hours…and hours…and hours…

The dream come true moment for me- the first one anyway- was seeing my name on the cover of a “real” book. Holding that first proof copy of Stronger Within in my small trembling hands is a moment that will live with me forever. I remember holding the unopened package, scared to actually open it…and then I did…and yes, there were tears.

As Walt Disney said in the quote above “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Go on, do something courageous today.

September – an acrostic poem

Summer’s end in sight

Ever hopeful of some late sunshine

Preparing for a colourful autumn

Trees changing colour before your eyes

Early sunsets create fiery skies

Memories of long light nights fading

Beginning to dread winter’s dark chill

Emotions in turmoil as the seasons change

Remembering…always remembering…
