Long Shadows – now available worldwide

“Folks, we’ve another new one for you next. It’s a bit of a reflection on the good times. This is Back In The Day.”

The Delta blues influences appeared to catch the crowd off guard, but they clapped along in time as Jake and Todd performed the fast paced, technically challenging song that’s lyrics focused on their good memories of Rich and the band in days gone by. With a nod, Jake allowed Todd his moment in the spotlight during the mid-song solo. He couldn’t help but smile with pride as his former student played the difficult solo faultlessly. As they continued together for the final verse and chorus, Jake mouthed, “Good job.”

“Give it up for Todd, folks!” he cried out at the end of the song. “Awesome job!”

Two songs later, Jake paused between songs for a drink of water. Screwing the lid back on the bottle, he said, “We’ve two more for you. I’d like to thank you all for coming out tonight. This is the first time we’ve done an acoustic show like this and you’ve made it easy for us. Thank you.”

The fans cheered enthusiastically. Holding his hand up for quiet, Jake continued, “Our last new song is the title track from the new record. If you were at the show in Baltimore last year you might already have heard this. This is Shattered Hearts.”

As they played the intro to the album’s title track, Jake recalled the night he first played it for his sister out on the sun deck. Holding onto the memory helped to keep his mind focussed on the song. In front of him, the loyal Silver Lakers, who had been at Rich’s memorial show, sang the chorus along with him. Their passion for the song swelled his heart.

“Thank you. That was special,” said Jake as the last notes faded away. “Now, all good things come to an end, folks. You’ve been awesome tonight. I hope you’ve enjoyed this as much as Todd and me. We’ll leave you with Flyin’ High.”

Five Sleeps To Go…..

Five sleeps to go…..

Five sleeps to go until Long Shadows officially launches on Amazon.

Ok, the paperback version snuck out a few days early, but the kindle version lands on 14 February and, in this modern world, that’s the format that readers prefer. Sad in a way as there’s nothing like holding a real book in your hands. I may be ever so slightly biased here.

Yes, I know launching a romance novel on Valentine’s Day is a bit cheesy and it’s also a bit odd to launch one on a Sunday but the date ties in SO nicely with the storyline.

Already the “what ifs” are creeping in…..what if folk don’t like it? What if no one looks at the launch day activity on my author page on FB? What if no one, other than those wonderful souls who have pre-ordered, buys it?…. and so my mind races on and on.

I still find it really hard to believe that I’ve written a five book series. I find it surreal that I’ve written and published any books, if I’m being totally honest! I’ve said it before, but it really is a dream come true.

When I sat down on my doorstep on 8 May 2013 to begin to write the story that grew to become Stronger Within, I had no idea that it would run to five books. In my naïve innocence, I was just writing a story, which at that point I was scared to let anyone read.

That’s a fear that’s never really gone away. I guess it’s a bit like a performer getting stage fright right before they step out in front of an audience. I’d love to say that with each additional book the fear shrinks but it doesn’t really. My hands were trembling as I hit “approve” on the paperback proof recently and I know I’ll be a nervous wreck come launch day.

So, why do I put myself through it?

I guess part of it is that you can’t let your fears rule you.

The main reason though is that I love writing. It’s my escape from this crazy, cruel, fecked up world that we’re living in. In the fantasy world that I write about, there’s no virus threats, there’s no need for masks, folk can still hug each other and they can go to gigs and enjoy hanging out with their music family.

Writing this final part of the Silver Lake series was an emotional journey from start to finish. When I began the story, the world was normal, and we were all going about our daily lives quite happily…then 2020 happened… and the world went to shit. There were times in the latter half of last year that I almost put my pen down and stopped. My mantra is “Dreams get you started Discipline keeps you going” and it has taken every last ounce of self-discipline to bring this one to life.

I didn’t take the decision to end this series lightly.  As an indie author, it’s getting harder and harder to win over new readers and to keep book bloggers engaged to review the books etc with each passing book in the series. Five books in any one series is more than enough in my humble opinion. Yes, there are several successful series that have run to more than five volumes but for me five was the magic number.

Without giving away any spoilers, Silver Lake will be back further down the line. Whether that’s in stand alone tales or another series remains to be seen. All I can promise you is that you’ve not heard the last of them…not yet.

For now though, all that’s left for me to do is to check over my launch day plans for the hundredth time and pray that you all love Long Shadows as much as I do when it lands on 14 February.

Introducing Shattered Hearts…..it’s launch day

Well, today is the day.

After months of writing, typing, spellchecking, proofreading and editing Book Baby 5 aka Shattered Hearts has finally been published.

If you’d told me a five years ago that I’d be publishing my first never mind my fifth novel I’d have told you that you were mad. This truly is a dream come true.

Writing the story is the easy bit. Pulling it all together is the hard bit and marketing it is the impossible bit! As ever, I couldn’t do this without the help of some wonderful people, my Infamous Five and my Cavalry. (You know who you are.) Thank you will never be enough for you guys.

Right, without further ado and before I get over emotional, allow me to introduce you to my fifth Book Baby, Shattered Hearts.

The Clock’s Ticking…..Book Baby 5 is almost here…..

The clock’s ticking and the To Do list is growing with last minute things…. Yes, it’s almost Book Baby 5 “birth” day.

I literally have a To Do list for the week…. don’t believe me? Here it is:

20191125_191702

That’s the simplified version! The rest of it is still in my head.

So, with just over a week to go till Book Baby 5 aka Shattered Hearts arrives, am I ready to let it fly free?

Eh….maybe……

The Kindle e-book version is complete and uploaded (still to double check that…) It’s also available for pre-order via Amazon – links are at the bottom. I set myself the target of obtaining 25 pre-orders and I’m still a few short… just saying 😉

The final paperback proof has arrived and I am still checking the corrections I made. Once that’s done, I need to upload the final document to Amazon.

eARC copies have been circulated to various book bloggers (If you are a book blogger and wish to review Shattered Hearts please let me know.

The book launch day is almost, kind of, sort of planned out- I still need to finalise that then source the necessary photos to accompany it before scheduling all the posts on my author page.

Missed the invite? Not to worry, here’s the link. Please feel free to drop by on the 6th December.

Book promotion is an ongoing challenge so I’ve been promoting Book Baby 5 while continuing to promote the other books in the Silver Lake series plus standalone spin-off Ellen. I find book promotion soul destroying, if I am being honest. It is the toughest aspect of being an indieauthor. So, in the interests of ongoing book promotion, the purchase links are also at the bottom.

Over and above, I still have this blog to write plus gig reviews to post, two social media fanpages for a real live rock star and the day job to do. (Yes, I work full time)

Oh and I’m a writer so there needs to be some time set aside to write…..

20190425_133814

And so it goes on…..

This is where my mantra really comes into play

These last few days, like the last few days before the arrival of any baby are stressful and filled with expectation. I just hope that the “birth” of Book Baby 5 is painless!

Ellen – the launch party replay (in case you missed it)

Did you miss the online launch party yesterday  to celebrate the release of Ellen? You did! OH!!! Not to worry – here’s what you missed. 🙂

15:30     Hi, I’m Rocky, After Life’s manager. Glad you could join us. Go and grab a drink from the bar then pull up a chair.   The band are nearly all here.  I’ll let them introduce themselves in a minute.

15:32     Hi folks, I’m Taylor. Nice to see so many familiar faces here to help launch Coral’s book, Ellen. Have you bought your copy yet? No? Oh, you’re missing out on a great read! Ok, so maybe I’m biased as it’s the band’s story but you can use the links below to grab a copy today

15:35     Hi. I’m Ellen. Glad you made it along today. If time allows, we’ll play a few songs later on tonight. We’ll see how the day goes. True to form, Luke’s running late.  While we’re waiting, here’s a little extract from the book about when Taylor and I first bumped into each other.

Three hours later, as Ellen was trying to pull her large suitcase through a crowded station, her mother’s words echoed in her head. Trying to thread her way through the throngs of commuters was a nightmare. Silently, she cursed her own limitations. For the first time she regretted being so stubborn about being able to cope with travelling into the city by rail on her own.

“Get a grip, Ellen,” she muttered to herself.

She paused to check the signage to determine where she was to exit the unfamiliar station. The next moment, she was knocked off balance by a tall, dark haired guy carrying two guitars and a huge backpack. With a squeal, she felt herself start to fall then felt an arm grab her to stop her. She could feel his strong hand on her upper arm, feel the pressure of his fingers burn into her tender skin.

“Sorry,” he apologized hurriedly. “I was too busy looking for the exit. I never saw you stop.”

“No harm done,” replied Ellen shyly.

His hand was still on her arm and part of her was desperate for him to remove it.

“You sure you’re ok?” he checked.

Adjusting her tinted glasses, Ellen forced a smile. “I’m fine. Thank you.”

“Well, sorry again,” he mumbled. “My mum always did say I should watch where I was going. Guess that’s another thing she was right about.”

“Mums are like that,” she agreed.

“Sorry again,” he apologised. “See you around.”

Without a backwards glance, he disappeared into the crowd. Spotting the sign, she had been searching for, Ellen set off again, heading for the exit.

15:40     Hi. I’m Luke, Luke Court. Apologies for being late.  Ellen’s asked me to share my guilty pleasure song with you.  Think she’s punishing me for being late. Ok, so my secret guilty pleasure song is Your Song by Elton John.

For a chance to win an e-book copy of Ellen, tell me yours. The winner will be picked at the end of the event.

15:45     Hi. I’m Cal, guitarist and sometime Cookie Monster with After Life. Ellen is the fourth book Coral has written. Have you checked out her other books? The Silver Lake series? No?  You should take a look. They’re FREE to download for today only. We put in an appearance in book two and again in book three.  Oh, and there’s some guy called Jake Power in them that Ellen finds hot!

Ellen: “CAL!” (blushes scarlet)

15:50     Hi. Coral here. Thanks for coming along today to help launch my new book baby, Ellen. Does anyone have any questions for me about the book, the Silver Lake books or anything in general?  #AskMeAnything

 Q&A

15:55     Ellen: Choosing a song to sing for my first After Life rehearsal was a challenge. You only get one chance to make a first impression and I wanted to get off on the right foot with these guys.  I chose this one.

For another chance to win an e-book copy of Ellen, what would you have chosen? The winner will be picked at the end of the event.

16:00     Rocky:  I’ve been working hard to get these kids on a stage near you. All publicity is good publicity. Did you know that a few months back Taylor and Luke were interviewed for Coral’s blog? No? Check out what they had to say.

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2017/08/16/a-little-sneaky-peek-into-the-after-life/

16:05     Coral: As you’ve just read, sometimes as a writer you struggle to connect with your characters or to control them. They have a tendency to misbehave.

Luke: “Do not!”

Coral: Oh, you do!  On occasion, the story can go off at a tangent. This happened with Taylor…

Luke: “Told you I behaved!”

Coral: Luke, stop interrupting! LOL. And we both know you have your moments in this book! Anyway, here’s a little excerpt of where Taylor wandered off on me.

Voices from further up the beach disturbed their peace and quiet and Taylor turned to see where they were coming from. It was two young teenage boys and they were dragging the surfboard out from the cave.

“Wait here,” instructed Taylor bluntly. “I don’t like the look of this.”

Barefoot, he sprinted up the beach towards the two boys, noting with concern how ineptly they were handling the board.

“Hey, guys, where you going with that?” he asked, his tone firm but non-threatening.

“Taking it out to catch a few waves,” replied one, his tone a bit too cocky for Taylor’s liking.

Glancing back at the calm water, Taylor took a deep breath then said, “Put it back. There’s no waves out there.”

“Told you,” muttered the other boy sourly.

“But there’s breakers further out!”

“Put it back,” repeated Taylor. “You’re not strong enough to handle that board so far out. Fact!”

“I suppose you’re an expert,” spat the boy bitterly.

“Not an expert but I’ve surfed these waters for a long time. Today’s not a good day to head out from here. Wind’s all wrong. Tide’s wrong. Now, put that board back!”

The boy dropped it in the sand at his feet, “How are we ever meant to learn?”

“Pardon?”

“If you are stopping us going out when its calm, how are we meant to learn to surf?”

The hint of exasperation in his voice tugged at Taylor’s conscience.

“How much time have you spent trying?”

“Weeks!”

“Can you stand up on the board?”

“No,” muttered the boy, staring down at his suntanned bare feet.

“What about you?” quizzed Taylor, turning his attention to the other boy.

“A bit. My brother showed me some stuff but he’s gone back to the army. Won’t be back for six months.”

“Tell you what. I’ll teach you both how to balance on the board. How to stand up. That’s a lesson best learned on a calm day,” offered Taylor generously.

“You will?”

Taylor nodded, “Now, bring the board down to the water’s edge.”

He ran back down the beach to where he’d left Ellen waiting. Hurriedly, he explained what was going on and admitted that “surf school” was in session for the next couple of hours.

16:10     Jack: (pulling up a chair at the table) Sorry, was just sorting out my drum kit. Split a drum head while I was warming up earlier.

Rocky: Another one!

Jack: Sorry, boss. What have I missed?

Cal: Buying your round!

Jack: In a minute. Did I miss the big book reveal? I did! Damn. Let’s take another look at the cover anyway. Love that cover shot!

16:15     Jen: Hi. I’m Taylor’s sister. Isn’t this amazing?  Much as I love to see After Life on stage, I have to confess that my favourite musical moments are when Tailz plays at home for us.  I love it too when the band are all here and we have a late-night beach barbeque……. Oh, happy memories.

16:20     Nana: At my age I can’t be doing with these Kindle things. Give me a real book. I like pages to turn. These kids laugh at me. They roll their eyes when I’m offering up my words of wisdom. Well, we’ll see who’s right in the end….

For a chance to win a paperback version of Ellen, tell me, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve had from your elders?  I’ll pick a winner at the end of the event.

16:25     Taylor: Love that old girl. Don’t know where I would be without her. She plays a mean honky tonk piano. Loves her Scott Joplin. You should hear her play this one.

16:30     Ellen: Before I slip off to warm up, I want to introduce you to someone. Meet my dad, Tim Lloyd. He’s the one who encouraged me to keep going after what happened. He’s the one that brought me my lyrics journal and has bought me several since.  I couldn’t have made it this far without him.

16:40     Rocky: I’ll let you in on a little history lesson before we hear the band play. When  I was looking for inspiration for Ellen’s stage costume, I dropped into the British Museum to see if I could get any ideas. Well, I was wandering through the Ancient Egyptian section when I spotted exactly what I was looking for. The Eye of Horus. I’ll let you read up about it yourself (see the link) but the Eye of Horus represents sacrifice, healing, restoration and protection.  Seemed like a good omen for our little songbird.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_Horus

Coral liked the idea too and used the symbol as her chapter headings.

16:45     Taylor: Hope you’ve enjoyed our chat. Before we go, I’ve one last little extract to share from the book. This was the first time Ellen heard me sing.

As Jen and Nana sat down at the table, Jen passed them both a drink.

“You need to earn those,” she teased.

“Just a few songs, Jen,” stated Taylor firmly. “We’re both off duty.”

“You’re never off duty,” retorted his twin. “You have music in your veins instead of blood!”

“Son,” interrupted Nana calmly. “Play me that song your mother loved so much.”

With a nod, Taylor turned to Ellen, “Do you know Everybody’s Talkin’?”

“Sorry. I don’t believe I do,” she confessed, feeling her cheeks flush with embarrassment.

“No worries. It’s an old song.”

Smiling over at his grandmother, Taylor began to play the classic song from Midnight Cowboy, a film that had been one of his mother’s favourites.

“Everybody’s talking at me. I don’t hear a word they’re saying.”

It was the first time that Ellen had heard her band mate sing. The warmth and emotion in his voice tore at her heart as she saw how hard it was for him to sing his mum’s favourite song. One half of her wished she knew the song so she could help him out; the other half of her was captivated by his raw heartfelt performance.

As the song ended, Ellen saw that his eyes were filled with unshed tears.

“Beautiful, son,” complimented Nana proudly. “Now, missy, what are you going to sing for this old woman?”

Book Baby 4- waiting for the stork to arrive

Stork 3

I’m fidgety. I’m growing impatient. I’m clock watching. I’m restless. I’m not sleeping well (ok, I seldom sleep well). I can’t concentrate on my writing.

It can only mean one thing….. I’m on the final count down to the arrival of Book Baby 4 aka Ellen.

Ellen final version front cover

Ellen is all set to be released on 1 September and this period feels a bit like the calm before the storm. In reality, there is very little calm about me (“No change there,” I hear my friends cry!)

The hard work is complete. The story has been told. Finally, the spellchecking and editing are done. Several ARC copies have been circulated for review. UPS are due to deliver the final paperback proof copy tomorrow (Please don’t let it get lost!) I’ve sense checked the Kindle edition. Pre-order for the e-book has been set up worldwide on Amazon. I’ve drafted the “script” for the online launch party. I’ve even ordered some promo guitar picks to use as a giveaway item.

What have I forgotten? What have I missed?

While I was stressing about things to a friend earlier, they described me as a “pro”. I fell about laughing.

This may be Book Baby 4 but I don’t feel like a “pro” at anything! A pro at stressing and worrying maybe!

When I’d stopped giggling, I did reflect on the comment. I know I am my own worst critic, not just of my creative efforts but in most aspects of life. One thing I appreciate hough is how incredibly fortunate I have been on this creative journey over the past few years. I may not have sold thousands of books but no one has said that my book babies are “ugly”. All three to date have earned heart-warming reviews and are enjoying 4.5/5 star status on Amazon.co.uk. It’s taken a while, a long while, but I am proud of what I have achieved so far. It totally blows my mind to think that people from all around the globe have downloaded and hopefully read the stories that I have created in the comfort of my kitchen (and the front doorstep).

I may be an “indie author” but I couldn’t have made it so far along this creative journey without the love and support and tolerance of some very special people (You know who you are)

So, all that’s left for me to do is to try to be patient and wait for 1st September to arrive so that I can introduce you to my new book baby, Ellen.

In the meantime, if you want to show your love and support for this wee anxious indie author, you could perhaps be so kind as to pre-order the Kindle edition of Ellen here:

And me?

Well, while I’m waiting I might as well continue work on Book Baby 5, the next instalment in the Silver Lake series,

An indie author’s work is never done!

Book Baby 3…birthing pains….

bonded-souls-final-version12

Two sleeps to go and nerves are creeping in….

Creeping? Who am I kidding? They are flooding in at 100mph!! The “what ifs” have started!

I’ve checked off the pre-launch To Do list and appear to have all essential bases covered.

1-      Upload and set up pre-order on Kindle

2-      Plan online launch party for 15 April 4-6pm and send out invites

3-      Sort out promo goodies

4-      Good Reads Giveaway set up – open till 17 April

5-      Proof paperback edition and approve

All ticked off….apart from No.5.

I think I’ve jinxed myself.

In my author’s note at the start of the book, I pass  comment that Book Baby 3 has been a “golden child.”

WRONG!! Oh, so wrong!!

It’s developed into a juvenile delinquent with a propensity for wandering off!

Let me back track slightly here.

A few weeks ago, I ordered my first paperback proof copy of Book Baby 3. I paid for expediated shipping and, as if by magic, less than a week later, I held the first proof in my hands. A surreal moment.

Cue over a week’s worth of proofreading and final tweaking. (Good job too as I picked up on two continuity errors among many other minor corrections to be fixed.) I also spotted an issue with one line on the back cover. It was ever so slightly squint but it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Cue another visit to Hell..sorry the dark depths of Photoshop.. to correct the alignment.

So far so good.

I uploaded the amended files and waited for the submission to be approved. The text file passed scrutiny with flying colours first time..whew! The cover file failed….then failed again. At the third time of asking, after further trips into the dark realms of Photoshop, it was finally approved.

Woo Hoo!!!

A fresh proof copy was ordered, again with  expediated shipping selected. Expected date of delivery was noted as 3 April.

The 3 April arrived….no book.

The 4 April arrived….no book.

The 5 April arrived and I finally managed to track it. According to the tracking info it was scheduled for delivery the next day. Happy days….or so I thought.

The 6 April arrived….no book. The tracking info had been updated though and kindly informed me that the parcel had been successfully delivered to West Columbia, South Carolina, USA. Some 3000 miles off target!

Once my initial wave of anger passed, I emailed CreateSpace to explain my dilemma and to seek a solution. Within 24 hours, I’d had the postage refunded, a promise of a fresh proof to be delivered, free of any shipping charges,  by 12 April and an apology for the error.

We’re all human. Mistakes happen. There was still time to get the proof and check it over before “B-Day” on 15 April.

By the evening of 11 April my sixth sense was twitching (seldom a good thing) and I checked the tracking info just to be sure that my proof was at least on the right side of the Atlantic Ocean.

It wasn’t.

It was on its way back to Kentucky due to an administrative error with a shipping invoice.

Deep breaths….more deep breaths…ok they didn’t help and the air was soon blue while I had a bit of a meltdown.

At this late stage there was very little to be done to correct the issue.

I slept on it while I waited for a response from CreateSpace.

Then I slept on it again…

Tonight, it was time to take a leap of faith and, at this point, I’m really hoping that it’s not one I’ll live to regret.

I’ve approved the paperback proof based on the digital proof copy..GULP!

I really didn’t have any choice.

So here we are, two sleeps away from “B-Day”….

Time to add No 6 to that To Do list

Oh, and, if you were the lucky resident of West Columbia, SC, USA, who received the mystery package last week from the mailman, I hope you take the time to read Bonded Souls. I hope you enjoy it and I hope that you can find it in your heart to leave a review on Amazon. Every star helps!

Let’s Get This Party Started….

BS card 3

Finally, the proofreading and the editing are complete!  Woo Hoo!!!

The evil commas have been beaten into submission..I hope!!

Next on the To Do list is to “launch” said Book Baby on the unsuspecting world.

Party planning has never really been one of my strong suits so I’m dithering a bit here over the invites. (“What if no one comes?” whisper the voices of paranoia in my head.)

Book Baby 3 aka Bonded Souls is set to be released on 15 April. But, how to celebrate the occasion?

My current thinking is an “online” party.  A  small gathering of Silver Lake fans hoping for an insight into Jake and Lori with perhaps the opportunity to win a few freebies.

And here the dilemma continues!

I’m no expert at launching anything! What do folk want from an online book launch?

Help me out here, please!!!!

My current thinking is to host the event over two or three hours, offer a few freebies for “likes” and “shares”, post a few teasers from the book’s content,  perhaps “interview” the central characters or even some “Silver Lake fans”.  I may even allow the “stars” themselves to do a character takeover for a while.

Have any of you ever “attended” an online party to launch a book before? If so, I’d welcome your thoughts here. What worked well?  What perhaps didn’t work so well?

In the meantime, I’ve a party to plan…has  anyone seen my copy of “Party Planning for Dummies”?

Nine weeks to go until Book Baby 3 Day….

bonded-souls-final-version12

A couple of weeks ago, I posted on here about having agreed to take part in an Indie Author Meet & Greet event.  As the big day drew nearer I was a nervous wreck about it all!

My Princess Paranoia head was in control and kept whispering doubts in my ear.

The three day event kicked off on the Friday. When I checked in to see what my fellow indie authors were posting, this triggered another round of sheer panic. I hadn’t prepared enough material!

Saturday afternoon was spent re-writing the entire plan and sourcing more accompanying photos.

On Sunday morning, mere hours before my scheduled slot, I was still tweaking….and then tweaking some more.

Four o’clock arrived and there was no going back. GULP!

After a minor technical glitch about posts with web links needing admin approval, I was off and running. The hour flew by!

I survived!!!

Celebratory prosecco was poured! (any excuse!)

One thing that did get revealed over the hour though was the cover design and publication date for Book Baby 3 and it dawned on me a short while ago that I hadn’t shared these on my blog…very remiss of me. Please accept my humble apologies, Silver Lake fans.

Bonded Souls, aka Book Baby 3 will be published on 15 April this year….nine weeks on Saturday!!!

I’ll be honest…it’s still being edited and proof read. I have my front cover (I’m quite proud of it. All my own work with minimal technical assistance from my rock fairy godmother) but the back cover is still in the planning stages. My Book Baby has a bare bum!

It’s all the wee finishing touches that take the time. The description for it on Amazon. The back cover blurb. I’ve not even thought about the author’s note yet. Nine weeks suddenly feels like nine minutes!

And how to launch it all? ….online party planning has begun. Watch this space! (must remember to put more prosecco in the fridge!)

This Sunday, I’m taking part in another online promo event. Well, really it’s Jake and Lori taking a guest slot at an online Character Takeover event. The nerves are building already…..eek!!!

If you’ve a spare hour on Sunday around 9pm UK time (1pm PST) please drop by and see if they say nice things about me.
