Merry Christmas from me to you

(credits to the owner 302 Life – photo is tagged -sourced from Facebook)

I’d just like to wish each and every one of you. a wonderful Christmas. I hope Santa has been kind to you and brought you all the books on your wish list. He’s brought me a few that were on mine.

If you’ve received a nice new kindle or perhaps a cover for an older kindle then perhaps you might also want to add some new books. I can recommend a few 😉

For those who have already read some or all of the Silver Lake series, I’m sure you can imagine Jake and Lori admiring Rehoboth Beach’s beautiful Christmas tree. I’d love to see the town at Christmas….maybe one day.

love n hugs

Why do I do it?… a question from an indie author

Something I never take for granted and never will is the simple fact that people buy, download and read my books.

Now I appreciate that as a self-published author with eight books bearing my name that that might seem a crazy thing to say but let’s reflect on this for a moment.

Stop to think for a moment how many books are available via Amazon either as eBooks or as paperbacks. The last stats I could find are several years out of date and at that time there were circa 7.5M books available for Kindle.

So, in that huge ocean of words, how does anyone ever find mine?

That’s a question I don’t know the answer to.

I rarely share details of the royalties that I earn from my books because to be honest, most people don’t believe that it amounts to as little as it does.

So far September has been a good month.

What really excited me when I looked at the stats was that someone has purchased a paperback book from me. So much blood, sweat, tears and sweary words go into pulling those paperback editions together that to sell even one is a big deal to me.

And something even bigger is seeing people from around the world reading my books. I am a UK based author and to  see that my USA market is bigger than my UK one is mind blowing!

Seeing my eight books on Amazon with their twinkling stars fills me with pride. (And that’s something that has taken me a long time to admit out loud)

I may not be raking in millions and fighting off publishing contracts, but I have seen the dream not only come true but continue year after year. This is especially encouraging as I am only too aware that I haven’t published a new novel for a while.  For those who are impatiently waiting on Book Baby 9, it is coming. More on that soon.

For now, though I want to pause and take a moment to reflect on what I have achieved. Sometimes its not about looking ahead to see how far you’ve got to go but about pausing to look back at how far you’ve come.

Thank you for sharing the journey with me.

And if you’ve yet to find my books among the millions on Amazon, allow me to help you.

Happy 10th blogiversary to me!

It’s been 10 years since I started this blog… 10 years ago today. Some of you may even remember that first nervous post. Here’s a reminder for those of you who joined this creative journey along the way December | 2013 | Coral McCallum

Back in December 2013 I set myself the challenge to post once a week to my new blog page to try to overcome my fear of letting people read what I write. (Still not quite conquered that fear.) My 2014 personal challenge was to post at least once a week. I’ve posted every week since. (OK there have been a few very short “cheat” posts, but they still count as a post).

So how has the creative journey progressed since 29 December 2013?

Well, I’ve self-published seven novels. Seven! These seven include a five book series, the Silver Lake series. Who would ever have thought it- certainly not me! It still feels surreal to see my name on the cover of a book and to see my books on Amazon with all those beautiful twinkling stars beside them.

I’ve written numerous short stories for my blog, many acrostic poems and I’ve kept my Silently Watching dark vampire angel serialised fiction going for the majority of those 10 years ( sh…don’t tell anyone but she’ll be back in January). I’ve promoted my book babies via my blog.

I even upgraded and became a .co.uk! A small detail but a huge step for me.

Over those 10 years I’ve watched my personal world evolve and change too. Who would have thought back in 2013 that we would live through a global pandemic? I’ve watched my kids grow up (They still aren’t interested in anything mother writes so not everything has changed!) And over the past three years, I’ve watched “the Big Green Gummi Bear” battle with terminal illness and ultimately lose that battle at the end of October.

As I look back over the earlier blog posts, I can see them slowly evolving.

As I look back at myself now compared to the “me” of 2013, I’ve evolved too.

Change is good.

So, what is next for my blog? Who knows! Not me! LOL I’ve not written it yet.

As my 11th year as a blogger and indie author commences, there will be more short stories, more delving into the Measly Jar of Motivation, more poems and more dark vampire angel tales.

I don’t wish to dwell on it, but the last three years have been rough, and they have taken their toll physically and emotionally, so I’m keen not to set too stretching a goal for 2024. I’ll keep it simple- the creative goal for 2024 is to finish and publish “Book Baby 8”. I’ve been working on it for more than year but it’s been a stop/start effort over the past six months or so. There are 366 days of 2024 to achieve it in, so I have that one extra day up my sleeve to get it over the line.

If you’ve travelled this journey with me from the very start- thank you for sticking with me.

If you joined along the way – thank you for sticking with me.

If this is the first blog post you’ve seen – welcome and I hope you stick with me.

None of this creative progress would be possible without the love and support of each and every one of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading my blogs, liking and sharing the content, buying and reading my books and for having faith in me. I really do appreciate it.

All that’s left to say is to wish you a very Happy New Year when it comes. May 2024 be kinder to us all.

Love n hugs

Coral

How many characters have you created?…

“How many characters have you created?” … that was the question that was put to me recently.

And the answer?…  I have no idea!

I have heard that there are authors out there who keep strict records of all their characters.

This author has scribbled notes on scraps of paper or post its stuffed into polypockets in the notebooks she has filled…. truth!

I do have a nice teal leather journal where I jot down potential character names and character traits or potential fictitious band names so perhaps there is a glimmer of hope. LOL

The question got me thinking about the various characters I’ve created over the past ten years or more. (If I go back far enough, its nearly 40 years for some aspects of Jake and Lori.)

I love the central characters on my book babies. The more I write about them and develop them, the more I begin to think about them as “real” people. As a writer, you spend as much time in your head with this “fictional family” as you do with your real family…sometimes more. Through time, thy take on personalities all of their own.

But what other minor characters have stuck with me?

The first to spring to mind is Reuben (Ben) Storm who made an appearance around Christmas 2018 in a short story I titled, A Party Dress, An Ugly Sweater And A Christmas Surprise.  Every now and then I think fondly of him and wonder what story he has to tell. There may be another outing for him one day…time will tell.

My dark angel, Anna, from my serialised vampire fiction Silently Watching is another favourite. It’s over nine years since I created her and began setting her free around various full moons. Like Reuben Storm, I feel she has a back story to tell us. Writing the Silently Watching instalments is always fun.

Thinking about minor characters in my book babies who have stolen my heart, Nana from Ellen is a standout. I love that little old lady!

Eden Friend, from Long Shadows, the final instalment of my Silver Lake series, is an intriguing young lady. I don’t want to give away any spoilers in case some Silver Lake lovers haven’t met her yet but she’s another one who could have more to say in due course.

The dark characters who were fun to write were Nicole Tonriverdi and Salazar Mendes, both from the Silver Lake series. Ms Tonriverdi may have had her day but with the right story, Sal’s past could be explored one day.

The more I pause to think about these characters, the more ideas are forming a queue in my imagination!

At the end of the day, no matter how many “people” I create, I’ll always be grateful to Lori Hyde and Jake Power for the creative path they set me on. Both of those characters had lived in my imagination for a very long time before I found the confidence to put pen to paper and set them free. Thank you will never seem enough to say to them.

I am currently working on Book Baby 8. There will be more news about it in due course and hopefully 2024 will see me share these characters with you. Time will tell…

Ten Years Ago Today The Creative Journey Began…

Ten years ago this week, I stopped at the local mall on my way back from work and bought a new A4 notebook and some pens.

Ten years ago today, I sat down on my front doorstep in the early evening sunshine with that notebook and one of the pens and began to write.

It would be weeks…months…before I told anybody what I was attempting to do.

At that time in my life, I knew I had to do something just for me and I decided, after a lot of soul searching, that the time felt right to put pen to paper once more.

As a child and a teenager, right into my twenties, I wrote. I wrote short stories, poems, even the first “book” but marriage and kids came along, and I put the lid back on my pen.

A series of events in both my work and my personal life took its toll on me emotionally, mentally, and physically and I recognised by early 2013 that I needed to do something just for me, something that gave me pleasure, something that relaxed me (that’s very hard to do) and something no one could take away from me.

What I sat down and began to write ten years ago today was what went on to become my debut novel, Stronger Within. The first book in the Silver Lake series. My first born “book baby.”

Now, I’ve written and blogged about this a few times over the years, so I’ll try not to repeat myself too much here.

Through losing myself in the pages of that notebook and countless others over the last ten years, I found myself too.

Writing is one of my key coping mechanisms in life. I journal extensively but writing my book babies is my escape from reality. Over the years, writing has become like oxygen to me. I need it to thrive!

Yes, there are days/evenings when my characters don’t want to play and that’s when I turn my attention to a short story or a poem or a piece of flash fiction.

There have been many occasions when I’ve read over the words that I wrote the night before and scored through them because I wasn’t happy with them.

I’m not a big planner, preferring to write from the heart and go with the flow. I always have key scenes in mind but there’s no detailed chapter plan (in fact splitting the tale into chapters is one of the last things I do), no storyboard, no character profiles. There are numerous post-its and scribbled notes and a handwritten calendar. This “pantser” approach did bite me with Book Baby 3, Bonded Souls, when I realised that I was too far through the timeline for one key scene. I wrote the scene and tried to slot it in where it was meant to be but that fundamentally didn’t work. There was no alternative…I scrapped circa 40k words and re-wrote it. Lesson learned!

Even with my current work in progress, Book Baby 8, I scrapped about 5k words and started it again.

I never actually “throw out” those scrapped words. I neatly put a line through them and start a fresh page.

I’ve kept every word I’ve written for the past 10 years and that includes blogs, short stories, gig reviews, poems…everything! That’s a lot of notebooks!

I’m not big on giving writing advice. Partly because I don’t feel qualified to do so and partly because if you are setting out on your creative journey, it’s YOUR journey so, explore and find your own path that suits your style and your story. Just because one approach works for me doesn’t mean it will work for you or anyone else. Trust in the story.

It’s been a surreal ten years. I can’t actually believe it has been ten years. Where did they go?

It’s also been an incredible ten years. I couldn’t have kept going without the encouragement, love, and support of a group of very special people. (You know who you are.)

My mantra has been a quote one of them shared on social media a long time ago.

Dreams get you started.

Discipline keeps you going.

And dreams do come true!

If you’d told me ten years ago as I sat on my front doorstep with that new notebook and pen that I’d see my name on the cover of a real book, that my words would earn five-star reviews on Amazon and that people from all over the world would read my books, I’d have laughed in total disbelief, but it’s happened…

If reading this is tempting you to pick up your own pen and start out on your own creative journey, DO IT!

There really is no feeling like making that dream come true.

Here’s to the next ten years and beyond!

Why not spend the weekend relaxing with Riley?

“Good evening,” began Garrett, a hint of nerves evident in his voice. “Welcome along to my humble abode to celebrate the launch of Riley’s debut album, Firefly Dreams.”

There was a polite round of applause before Dr Marrs began to speak, “I first heard this young lady when she visited JJL as part of a high school music workshop. Her voice immediately caught my ear. A few weeks later, I invited her back out to the studio to sing on Garrett’s solo record. Again, she blew me away with her raw talent. Move forward a few months to last summer. Riley spent a few weeks down at JJL with me and what you’re about to hear is the result of all the blood sweat and tears…. quite a few tears.”

“Without further ado,” continued Garrett theatrically, “We give you Miss Riley Johnson!”

Having offered up a silent prayer to the muses, Riley began to play the intro to Sand Dollars. Keeping her playing subtle, she felt her nerves beginning to ease as she sang her tale of walking the beach at sunrise in search of sand dollars, the flat sea urchins found along the shoreline. It was a song filled with hopes of a bright future where the sand dollars were a metaphor for real dollars.

Have you met my favourite little green haired girl – Riley?

Up on stage, Three Dead Mice brought Killer to an end.

“New York, thank you!” screamed Rob, glancing over towards them. “Now, we’d like to invite a friend… sorry two friends… up here to join us. New York, let’s hear it for the beautiful Riley Johnson and the legend that is Jake Power!”

The small crowd went wild as Riley and Jake stepped up on stage. Hurriedly a guitar was found for Jake then Rob stepped back up to the mic.

“Time to Shoot To Thrill!”

With a nod, Rob and Jake both began to play the distinctive ACDC intro before the others joined in on bass and drums. Gone was the quiet Riley from the album launch. In her place, centre stage, was a rock queen in waiting as she poured all her vocal power into the raucous lyrics. Both Rob and Jake joined in for the chorus, standing either side of her.

“Pull the trigger!” screamed Riley as she spun away, allowing the two guitarists to play together. No one watching would have guessed that the performance was entirely unrehearsed. Their passion for the classic rock track was clear for all to see and hear.

“Folks, give it up for Riley and Jake!” roared Rob, grinning from ear to ear as sweat ran down his face.

** note- this tale makes reference to self-harm**

Ten Days of Riley Johnson….

It’s ten days since my favourite little green-haired girl, Riley, was released into the world. Been a whirlwind few days.

So far, everyone seems to be loving her and it warms my heart to see that she is sitting on Amazon and Goodreads surrounded by 5* reviews already. Hopefully over the coming weeks and months, as more folk get around to reading her story, this will continue. (Yes, that was a subtle hint to pick up a copy if you haven’t already.)

Marketing is the bit I struggle with most. I promote my work on a shoestring budget so most of it is done via social media, a website called AllAuthor  (www.allauthor.com/author/coralmccallum )and this blog page. Word of mouth is also a great marketing tool (Yes, that was another subtle hint that if you’ve read Riley and enjoyed her tale, tell people, please!)

Books, actual paperback books, make great Christmas gifts. (Yes, that’s another subtle hint) Riley would look fabulous all wrapped in silver with a huge green bow, don’t you think?

So, what’s next? I’ve been asked that a few times over the past ten days!  I’m still in the undecided mode on that to an extent. Yes, I have started “something” that may become book baby 8 but it’s too soon to tell. For now, it’s about relaxing a bit, enjoying the festive season and we’ll see what 2023 and beyond brings.
