The Measly Jar of Motivation – what placates you?

“What placates you?”

Oh, good question from the Measly Jar of Motivation to start the blogging year!

Placate- from the Latin placare meaning to appease.

Placate – to make someone less hostile or angry; to pacify or calm someone.

When I pulled this question from the mason jar, I thought “Oh, this will be easy!” but now that I am thinking about the origin of the word placate and the dictionary meaning, I’m not so sure.

So, why am I finding it a challenge to answer this question? Because I’m genuinely not a hostile or angry person who needs to be pacified and placated. It’s as simple as that.

On the odd occasion when I do get angry, I’m more likely to walk away than to get riled. I dislike conflict.

If I look at this question from a different angle and rephrase it as “What calms you?” then it’s easier to answer…much easier!

A walk along the beach is my favourite way to calm myself and replenish my soul. There’s a small stretch of beach about a mile and a half from my house and as often as I can, I’ll walk there and let the feeling of the sand under my feet ground me. If it’s a sunny day then that’s a bonus as sitting in the sun is another thing that I do when the chance arises to keep calm, I think I’m solar powered! LOL

Practising yoga and channelling Reiki as I meditate first thing in the morning several days a week, calms me. I might only spend a few minutes on my yoga mat some days but it’s enough.

Writing is the other obvious answer to the revised question. I journal extensively and have done for years now and I find that is a really effective way to calm down, especially if someone is preying on my mind. Seeing the “issue” written down on the page frequently kills its power. Don’t underestimate the value to be found in journalling. Not a day goes by that I don’t write something, even if it’s only my diary entry at bedtime.

Finally, music is another thing that calms me. There’s always music playing in the house or in the cara. I have my “go to” songs for certain emotions but music, especially live music, is so good for the soul.

So, what placates you? Please comment below.

Forest calm…or is it witchcraft?

Over ten years ago, a fortune teller caught me off guard and rather enthusiastically declared I had been a healing witch, a green forest dwelling witch, in a past life. I’ll not lie, that lady struck a few chords that night but that’s perhaps a story for another time. She also scared the hell out of me!

I’m not a big believer in having your fortune told. In fact, she was only perhaps the third or fourth “fortune teller” that I have ever had a conversation with, and it was only the second ever and, to date, last “reading” I’ve had. I had mis-understood what I was walking in on, and my guard was down. Her initial exuberant greeting rattled me, and my guard remained down while I was in her company.

She was adamant that I was a healer or had been in a past existence. She claimed I had lived in a forest and been well respected for my abilities as a green witch.

Well, if she says so….

Her words echoed back to me earlier this evening as I went for a walk with a friend through some local woodland.

It had been a long day. There’s a lot going on in my world just now and some of it was preying on my mind, leaving me feeling tense, more than a little sad and rather stressed out.

As we explored slightly off the beaten track, through some trees and woodland, I felt a weight lift and an air of calm descend. It was a noticeable shift in my energy. Definitely, a shift for the better. For the first time in a while, I felt at peace with myself.

Maybe the fortune teller from all those years ago was right….

It’s all about perspective

As a creature of habit, I take the same route when I go for a walk along the shore at Lunderston Bay, a beauty spot near where I live. It’s very easy to allow routine to kick in and to not look around you.

More recently I’ve been using these walks almost as mindfulness sessions, taking the time to myself to clear my mind. I’ve left my iPod at home and focussed on the sounds of the world around me- the seabirds, the waves, the kids laughter as they play on the beach or in the playpark, dogs barking as they too play on the beach or in the water, the sheep in the fields, the wind around me. I’ve paid attention to the ground beneath my feet- the soft sand, the damp hardpacked sand along the water’s edge, the squishy feeling of the seaweed, the gravel of the path. I’ve paid attention to the sights – the small shells and bright white pebbles in the sand, the sun glinting off the water, the wildflowers that grow along the paths.

I wonder how many people visit this spot and see and hear and feel nothing, seeing it purely as place to let the kids or the dog run free?

Sometimes though you need to look at even the most beautiful places from a different perspective….and you can have a little fun whilst doing it.
