Continue The Story – Mariposa

She had never seen anything like it. She had only ever dreamed of seeing one. Now, there it was, just a few feet away from her.

It was beautiful! More beautiful than she could ever have imagined.

It was also bigger, much bigger, than she had anticipated. Its wingspan was wider than her handspan.

Oh, she could watch it all day!

Reaching for her camera, she took photo after photo of the beautiful creature before her.

Almost as if it knew it was being photographed, it slowly folded its majestic wings so that she could enjoy the view of the detailed pattern on the underside. It was almost as pretty underneath as it was with its wings spread wide.

She knew the others were already trekking on ahead and that she’d need to hurry to catch up, but she needed a few more moments with this precious creature.

They’d been trekking through the forest all day and were due back at their hotel in under an hour. This was the first one of its kind that she’d seen. It might be the only one she’d ever see.

She heard footsteps and looked up to see the tour guide, Miguel, approaching.

“Ah, hermoso,” he sighed as he stood beside her and followed her gaze. “Mariposa.”

“It’s a boy?” she quizzed.

Miguel nodded, “Only the males are so blue. And its not really blue. Is a trick of the light… it reflects.”

He paused, struggling for the English words to use. She nodded and smiled.

With a graceful movement, the blue morpho butterfly flitted away.

She gazed wistfully at the leaf where it had been.

Forest calm…or is it witchcraft?

Over ten years ago, a fortune teller caught me off guard and rather enthusiastically declared I had been a healing witch, a green forest dwelling witch, in a past life. I’ll not lie, that lady struck a few chords that night but that’s perhaps a story for another time. She also scared the hell out of me!

I’m not a big believer in having your fortune told. In fact, she was only perhaps the third or fourth “fortune teller” that I have ever had a conversation with, and it was only the second ever and, to date, last “reading” I’ve had. I had mis-understood what I was walking in on, and my guard was down. Her initial exuberant greeting rattled me, and my guard remained down while I was in her company.

She was adamant that I was a healer or had been in a past existence. She claimed I had lived in a forest and been well respected for my abilities as a green witch.

Well, if she says so….

Her words echoed back to me earlier this evening as I went for a walk with a friend through some local woodland.

It had been a long day. There’s a lot going on in my world just now and some of it was preying on my mind, leaving me feeling tense, more than a little sad and rather stressed out.

As we explored slightly off the beaten track, through some trees and woodland, I felt a weight lift and an air of calm descend. It was a noticeable shift in my energy. Definitely, a shift for the better. For the first time in a while, I felt at peace with myself.

Maybe the fortune teller from all those years ago was right….

What will you choose to do?

A few months ago, a close friend gave me a piece of advice . (I may have mentioned it on here before – can’t quite recall at this precise moment in time) Paraphrasing slightly, what they advised was to keep writing, keep taking lots of pictures, lie on the beach and stare at the sky. Basically- do more of what makes me happy.

Those words have echoed back at me regularly over the past 9/10 months and, wherever possible, they have been words to live by.

Taking time for yourself in this crazy world isn’t selfish. It’s called self-care. It’s essential.

So, what have I done?

Well, I’ve kept writing and typing Book Baby 7. I’m onto my second notebook and I’ve typed 10 000 words.

I’ve taken hundreds and hundreds of photos. Very few of these have people in them and, of late, there have been more than a few flowers. Here’s just one to give you a flavour ( absolutely no idea what kind of flower this is but I love it!)

I haven’t sat on the beach …yet…but I have walked it many many times over the months.

and I’ve stared up at the sky…

So, what have you done to make you happy?

A walk in the woods…..

Practically on my doorstep lies a 10 000 acre estate that can trace it’s heritage back to Robert the Bruce and before today I’d barely set foot in it.

With Covid restrictions still tight in Scotland and a sunny day beckoning me outside, I suggested to Boy Child that we take a walk through the estate instead of our usual quick lunchtime walk. We had planned on it being a short meander but we were soon led astray by the lure of country trails and woodland.

Having left the car at the marina (yes, I know I could have walked from the house but this was initially meant to be a quick walk!) we entered the estate.

then the lure of the woodland paths proved to be too strong….

these are actually alpacas not sheep…honest!

The sounds of nature and the peacefulness of the woodland were just what my soul needed today.

My Converse on the other hand may beg to differ (They have since been flung in the washing machine!)

and to round it all off beautifully, as we walked out of the estate and back to the car, I spotted a butterfly. My first butterfly photo of the year.

Happy days….

Spring (Haiku)

Icy east wind blows.

Sun shines on the rutted path.

Spring lies just beyond.

note: a Haiku is a three line Japanese poem of seventeen syllables ( five, seven, five) evoking images of the natural world.
