Pause….. Breathe…… Open Your Eyes

Sometimes you need to hit “pause” and just escape into the great outdoors.

It’s no secret – I love the sun, regardless of how hot or cold the air temperature may be. While I much prefer a hot sunny summer day, I can’t resist the crisp cold sunny days of Autumn.

Recently one such day lured me out for a long walk with my camera.

We spend so much of our lives rushing from A to B, glued to our laptops, or browsing social media on our phones that we forget to hit “pause” and actually look up and appreciate the world around us.

It’s amazing what you see when you just open your eyes ….. here, take a look!

Measures of Spring

Those who follow this blog will already know that I like to escape from the salt mine during my lunch hour and go for a wander.

Some days it is a leisurely stroll, with gentle music and a mind full of daydreams (NO, I’m not sharing them with you  hee hee)

Some days its is a stomp, with loud heavy metal  music on full blast and a mind full of the frustrations of the morning. (No, I’m not sharing those either.)

Being a creature of habit, I have a tendency to walk the same route most days. Very quickly you become aware of the surroundings and the changes in them. You can track the changes in the season by them.

Spring sees one of the most dramatic changes over quite a short period of time. For the past few weeks I’ve been trying to capture one photo per week from roughly the same spot (bit of a hit or miss with that) to try to highlight this.

Last week I was on holiday from work and in my absence  a dramatic transformation took place!

Wondering what on earth I’m talking about now?  I’m talking daffodils!

Here, see for yourself.

2017…. a time to reflect

Well, it’s reaching that time of year when everyone seems to be taking stock and reflecting back on the year.

Guess I better join in….

Here’s my year in photos

And in musical terms…. here’s my take on 2017

Picking just 24 photos out of the hundreds…. ok thousands.. I’ve shot this year was nigh on impossible LOL.

These really are just a flavour of the year gone by.

And not to forget my biggest achievement of 2017 …. book baby 3 🙂

Huge thanks for all your love and support and encouragement this year.

I wish each and every one of you all the very best for 2018.

Sometimes You Just Need To Stop And Look At The Colours Around You…..

20170918_121745

I’ve been reflecting and thinking….. (Oh, no! Here she goes! I hear you cry!)

Life is busy. Life is chaotic. It’s demanding on us  mentally and physically. We are  overloaded on a daily basis with information thanks to the technology that we have at our fingertips. It’s terrifying the amount of information  that we carry around in our pockets without a second thought about it. At the touch of the screen, we can connect with friends all over the world and see snapshots of their lives. Web cams allow us to “peek”  live time into cities and beaches and  who knows where else the world over. We even have devices in our own homes that we talk to…”Alexa, play songs by….”  Sometimes she even does as she’s asked. (My Alexa is developing an attitude)

So, how often do you actually press “pause” and look at the world around you, the real world?

This thought first struck me a few weeks back as I strolled through a largely deserted Dublin on a Sunday morning. It’s struck me a few times since.

Autumn (Fall, if you prefer) is a myriad of colours. Have you even noticed? Did it even cross your mind to look?

I did….. and here’s some of the colours I found.

So, next time you go for a walk, keep your phone in your pocket and look at the world around you instead of the screen. You might be pleasantly surprised.

2016 – a year in pictures- the severely edited highlights

I’m not big on reflecting back on the year about to end etc, etc. I do however capture a lot of my life in photographs and hold the memories close to my heart. I have thousands of photos from 2016 so here are the severely edited highlights (one per month)

and then there were some of the gigs I enjoyed……

Lots of happy memories there.

The Colours of Autumn

When did you last pause in your hectic day to look around you and appreciate the beauty of the Autumn colours?

They are spectacular!

Much as I love a hot sunny summer’s day, a crisp sunny Autumn day comes a close second. I was out for a meander at lunchtime today and that was when the variety of colours that Mother Nature has created for us really struck me.

The sun was hitting the leaves of the trees around the area where the salt mine is  and they were positively glowing gold. There were scarlet berries in the hedgerow. Some of the green plants and bushes were turning to their autumn orange and reds. Oh so pretty!

It’s as though we’re being treated to a last colourful display before the dark days of winter are upon us.

If you haven’t looked around you, here’s a few photos to remind you of what you are missing.

As Staycation 2016 draws to a close….time to reflect

BeFunky Collage 1

OK a bit of a cheat’s post but I’m sure you’ll forgive me.

The above collage sums up Staycation 2016 – bare feet, coffee, cinnamon bagels, writing, some typing (yes, I’ve begun the typing marathon that will become Bonded Souls …eventually!), a couple of cocktails, some photography, some great live music and , of course, several pairs of Converse!

Looking at the world in small rectangles

In 2013 I undertook a photography challenge. The task was to post a different photo each day to Facebook and that it had to be a photo taken that day.

By October/November time it really was a challenge and was also bordering on an obsession!

There’s only so many different things that you see in a normal humdrum day.

However, I completed the challenge and would encourage any aspiring photographers to give it a go sometime.

The legacy of this photography endurance event is that I still have that mindset to be looking for my photo of the day.

If I’m out for a walk, as is my usual want at lunchtime, I’m constantly looking at the world around me in small rectangles.

I am also a creature of habit. You could almost set your watch by me!

This means that I walk the same route most days at lunchtime. (I confess that over the past month I’ve been taking a longer route but that’s primarily to get my step count up as part of the annual GCC challenge to complete 10000 steps per day for 100 days)

Every day I take two precious items with me – my iPod and my phone. Phone means camera. Camera leads to photographs and so it goes on.

If you walk with your eyes wide open to the world around you it’s amazing what you can see. Whether it’s a boat sailing gracefully down the Clyde or a seagull biding its time on the railings or a starfish lying in the path, every day is different.

These lunchtime meanderings are good for the soul.

I’ve not undertaken a long term photographic challenge since 2013 but I could be tempted to do another one. Someone has already suggested taking a photo of the same view from the same point every day for a year to catalogue the seasonal changes. It’s a thought…..

For now though, here’s a selection of views from my lunchtime wanderings.
