A little insight into things to come….

As it’s almost Christmas, I thought I’d share something a little sparkly and new with you this week.

As last week’s poetic blog alluded to, for the past couple of years words haven’t flowed as smoothly as I would like. I’m loathe to describe it as writer’s block as the storylines were still there for my current book baby along with ideas for future book babies. There are a dozen things that I could blame this word drought on but every time I go to type the words here, they sound like excuses to me and I’m not about to make excuses for not being able to park my backside at my desk and write as easily as I have in the past. Life happens and over the past couple of years it has thrown a few roadblocks in the way of creative progress. There’s been a lot of shadow work done in the background to clear the path. Let’s leave that thought there…

Now, I am feeling a little more confident that the word drought is finally over and thought I would share a short excerpt from Book Baby 9. The first draft started out as Book Baby 8 three years ago then, as the words weren’t flowing, I decided to publish Beginnings , my first collection of poems, so it became Book Baby 8 while I pulled it together in early 2024. When I returned to the book baby in the photo above, it naturally evolved into Book Baby 9. My first draft is not quite finished yet but I’m close enough to the end, to feel comfortable enough to share an excerpt from the start with you.

What you see in the photo is what Book Baby 9 looks like at present but there are roughly 30 000 of those words already typed. When I felt that I couldn’t write, I typed instead. It is my intention that Book Baby 9 will finally see the light of day and be set free in 2026. It’s still nameless as I type this and its naked too as I’ve not got as far as thinking about a cover design. All in good time.

For now though, for those who have been waiting so patiently for word of a new novel, here’s a little taster of what’s to come. Be gentle with these words. They are new and at present un-edited.

Streaks of spring sunshine filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the trail as she walked. She had been walking for hours, lost in her grief; lost in her thoughts. Beside her Storm and Lily walked patiently, occasionally touching her hand with their noses as if to say, “We’ve got you.” Both dogs seemed to be empathising with her emotional state.

Ahead of her, further down the trail, she could see the large flat rock at the viewpoint. Trying to gauge how much daylight was left, she decided to rest for a minute or two before walking the last couple of miles back to the studio house.

With a sigh of relief, she sat on top of the rock, drinking in the spectacular view before taking a long chug on her water bottle. At her feet, Lily let out a mournful whine.

“I know how you feel,” she said, reaching out to fondle the wolf dog’s ears. Suddenly, she felt a weight on her thigh at the other side as Storm laid his huge head down, his gaze fixed on her.

“Just give me a minute then we’ll head home. I know you guys are hungry. I am too. Didn’t mean to walk you as far but…oh, you understand, don’t you?”

By the time she reached the final section of the trail the light was fading fast. Dusk had settled quickly as they had descended. In the distance she could just see the twinkling lights that were strung round the patio at the rear of the house, and she thought she could smell a whiff of BBQ on the breeze. Her stomach rumbled at the thought of food. Breakfast had been her last meal and, apart from a few fruit snacks, she hadn’t eaten all day.

“Ah, Miss Johnson, I presume,” quipped JJ from his reclined position on the hammock. “I thought you’d got lost.”

“Sorry,” apologised Riley quietly as she sat her empty water bottled on the table. “I didn’t mean to be gone all day.”

“No harm done” he said, wriggling to sit up and get his feet on the ground before the hammock tipped him out. As he stood up, JJ said, “I’ll sort the dogs and you can start dinner. The chicken skewers are in the refrigerator.”

“Sure. These guys have been good company today, but they must be starving. I’d guess we’ve walked about fifteen miles.”

“Easily done when you’re following your thoughts as well as the trail,” he commented. Snapping his fingers, he called the dogs to heel and led them round to their enclosure.

Soon Riley had the chicken kebabs on the grill and the table set for supper. She had fetched some salad and coleslaw along with a bag of tortilla chips plus plates and cutlery.

“Smells good,” complimented JJ stepping back out of the house. “Dogs are settled for the night. They were ravenous. I guess they didn’t hunt while they were with you. Storm usually snags a rabbit or two on a long hike.”

“Poor babies,” said Riley turning the skewers on the grill. “They’ll sleep well after that.”

“But will you?” he asked, handing her a beer.

“I hope so. I barely slept a wink last night.”

“You want to talk, Miss Riley?” prompted JJ softly.

Busying herself transferring the chicken onto a serving plate, the little green haired girl dodged the question until they were seated at the table. Keeping her gaze on the plate in front of her, Riley said, “I know he was old. I’d guessed he was sicker than he was letting on. Recognised the look in his eyes. My Grammy had that same look.  Wish I’d had the chance to thank him and say goodbye.”

Tears fell onto her plate as her grief crashed through her.

What’s happening with Book Baby 7?

Somehow, we’ve reached the end of August – no idea how we got here! My head’s still back in June somewhere! – and the last rays of summer are sinking on the horizon earlier and earlier each evening.

I’ve come to wonder of late if I’m really solar powered at heart. Every opportunity I’ve had all summer, I’ve been outdoors either meandering or simply sitting in the sun lost in a book.

Now though, as the evenings are growing cooler and darker, it’s time to move back indoors and turn my creative attention back to Book Baby7.

Don’t panic- it’s not been entirely neglected over the summer months. I have made progress both with writing the first draft and typing it up, but the pace has been leisurely.  Maybe it’s been a summer case of writer’s block rather than sun block, but I’m not convinced.  Personally, I think I just needed a break to recharge these (solar powered) batteries.

Like many people, the day job still involves working from home. My home working space during the day is in the living room and when I finish up each day, the work stuff gets cleared away and my creative space is restored for the evening… unless the sun’s shining and its warm and I’ve been lured outside once more to sit on my nice new bench with my kindle until the sun sinks below the rooftops. I do think that part of the issue is that I am thoroughly sick of the sight of my living room!

Now though, its time to refocus and show Book Baby 7 some love and give it the attention that its craving.

So, for those among you who are impatiently waiting for it, where am I with it?

Good question!

I’ve roughly 30% of the first draft handwritten.

I’ve about 25% of the first draft typed. (I’ve paused typing to focus on adding to the handwritten word count).

I have the storyline pretty much worked out in my head.

It has a title but no, I’m not sharing that with you just yet.

I have a release date in mind too but that one needs to remain under wraps for now.

It’s still entirely naked as I’ve not yet given much thought to the cover.

So, all I would ask for now, is that you bear with me and trust that it’s coming in 2022 at some point (hopefully!).

And, if you’re patient, I promise to share a little excerpt soon.

A month post partum Book Baby 6….

Scary to think that it’s been over a month since the launch of Book Baby 6 aka Long Shadows.

The Silver Lake fans have welcomed it with open arms and showered it with love and I’m delighted that it’s sitting on Amazon.co.uk with no less than 12 five star reviews already. It’s also earned 2 five star reviews on Amazon.com which to me is HUGE plus 5 five star reviews on Good Reads. I honestly couldn’t have asked for more so thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has taken the time to leave a review.

I’ve said it before that these kind words and twinkling stars fuel the fires of creativity and I genuinely mean it. The kind words this time have made me question if I made the right decision to end the Silver Lake series after five books.

Yes. Yes, I did make the right decision but that doesn’t mean I don’t miss those characters. They’ll be back at some point in the not too distant future I’m sure.

So, what happens now? What happens once your book baby is set free and you’re waiting and watching as the world reads it?

Well, if you’re like me, you start thinking about the next one.

Actually, I started Book Baby 7 a couple of weeks before Long Shadows was published. I bought 5 new matching notebooks and started to write but I didn’t truly connect with it for a good three weeks or more. For once I have the storyline mapped out in my head. (No, I don’t plot these books out. I kind of go with the flow here.)

I think I had a mild case of post-partum book baby blues. Almost a year of living in lockdown has taken its toll on a lot of writers’ creativity and it would appear I’m no exception, but I’ve worked my way through it and have found my way into my own storyline. I just hope I can stay there!

I’m not jinxing my progress by revealing too many details of the focus of Book Baby 7 but will say this – I’m giving myself a generous window of time here. Please don’t expect this one to be ready before summer 2022 at the earliest.

In the meantime, if you’ve not met Jake and Lori and the rest of Silver Lake, you can still catch up with them on Amazon. You’ll also find Ellen hanging out there too.

This week it’s been all about Book Baby 6..

This week it’s been all about the creativity and the word count.

Normal blog service will resume next week

Author Newsletter..No. 9..slightly later than planned….

Apologies, folks, I appear to have lost track of time and it’s been way too long since I posted a newsletter update.

I’ll blame the fact that 2020 feels as though it’s been one long month since mid-March and there doesn’t seem to be many signs of improvement. C’est la vie!…

Now, where were we?

On the creative front, I’ve been working diligently on Book Baby 6 aka Long Shadows and revealed the cover on my blog on 1st October. Missed the big unveiling? No worries, here’s a reminder:

And, as promised, I also shared a sneak peek inside back in July

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/07/28/a-timely-reminder-and-a-sneak-peek-into-book-baby-6/

I’m currently in the home strait with the first draft of Long Shadows and hope to have the first draft completed by the end of November, keeping me on track (by the skin of my teeth) for the planned  publication date early in 2021. Patience. All will be revealed in due course.

Over the summer months I continued to have fun with some acrostic poetry

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/08/10/resilience-an-acrostic-poem/

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/06/29/lockdown-an-acrostic-poem/

Months of living in lockdown gave me time to reflect on the things that in future I won’t take for granted and I shared those thoughts on my blog in late June (seems a lifetime ago now)

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/06/23/ill-never-take-some-things-for-granted-again/

Since we last caught up, I celebrated a “milestone” birthday and was surprised with the most fantastic birthday cake. Check this out! It was incredible and delicious!

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/07/13/happy-to-eat-my-own-words/

Last time out I told you about The Gingerbread Tea House and their fabulous book exchange.  The owner has put her own lockdown time to good use and has now published her first novel, Chasing Butterflies, with her second, The China Doll,  due for release on 14 November. I caught up with Nicole Thorne earlier this month on my blog

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2020/10/19/introducing-fellow-indie-author-nicole-thorne/

Like many, I have found 2020 challenging on many different levels. One wise woman in the organisation I work for said a few months back (and I paraphrase) – “don’t think of it as enduring things. Think of it as making history.” And I guess she’s right. Each and every one of us has helped to write history this year and who knows we may still be “making history” well into 2021. Time will tell on that one.

For now, I’ll leave you with a reminder of my mantra. This really has kept me forging forwards this year.

Stay safe, folks

Love n hugs

Coral

PS – don’t forget to check out the Silver Lake series and Ellen. If you’ve read them and loved them, tell your friends 🙂

And without further ado, allow me to reveal the cover of Book Baby 6 aka Long Shadows.

Long Shadows is the fifth and final book in the Silver Lake series.

Publication is set for early 2021. Pre-order details to follow nearer the time.

To those Silver Lakers amongst you….patience. Long Shadows will be with you soon.

A timely reminder and a sneak peek into Book Baby 6……..

This came up in my Facebook memories earlier today…… it was a timely reminder.

20190428_082200

My primary creative focus these days is Book Baby 6. I have a date in mind that I would like the first draft completed by and it’s going to take all my self-discipline to meet that deadline. It doesn’t get any easier with each passing book, trust me!

Want a sneak peek? No…. stop reading here. Yes….keep reading.

Just a little taste of things to come in early 2021……

Gazing out towards the empty stage, Jake took stock. A stool, a table and his four guitars were all in position. There were bottles of water on the table. A row of picks was slotted into the mic stand.

The houselights dimmed and the near sell-out crowd let out a loud cheer. Taking a deep breath, Jake watched for his cue then loped casually out on stage to a wall of cheers from the fans. Flashing a Power smile at them and at the assembled photographers, Jake lifted his guitar, checked the tuning and opened his support slot with an acoustic rendition of Silver Lake’s Dragon Song. In front of him, the fans along the rail were hanging on his every word.

“Good evening, Philly,” he said at the end of the first song.

A huge cheer surged back at him.

“Who’s excited to see Garrett Court tonight?”

Another huge roar hit the stage.

“This next song is another one from the Silver Lake vault. This is Depths.”

A few minutes later as he began Lady Butterfly, Jake saw Riley in the wings standing beside his brother waiting for her cue. He smiled at the height difference between them then noticed that Melody was standing beside Riley, holding her hand. So lost in thought was he that he almost messed up the final verse. Only a few die-hard Silver Lakers in the front row noticed his faux pas. He laughed and felt himself blush.

“Philly, I’d like you to welcome out on stage a very special, very talented, young lady now. Allow me to introduce you to the incredible Miss Riley Johnston!”

Confidently, Riley ran out to meet him, her freshly dyed green hair shining under the spotlights. Several of the fans along the rail had been at the Gramercy Theater show and, recognising Riley, cheered wildly for the young vocalist.

“Folks, this is Miles From Home,” called out Jake.

A second stool had been brought out along with a second mic stand. Nimbly, Riley hopped up on the stool and lifted the microphone from the stand. With a glance at Jake for reassurance, she prepared for their duet. The familiar intro to the Weigh Station classic rang out over the crowd. Keeping her voice low and husky, Riley began the first verse. By the time she reached the chorus, the fans were hanging on her every word. Just as they’d rehearsed, they traded verse and chorus then came together for the final verse.

“Sing this last chorus with us, Philly!” called out Riley, her confidence soaring.

It warmed Jake’s heart to hear the fans respond to the teenager’s request and he could see she was smiling beside him.

“Philadelphia!” roared Jake when the song ended, “Give it up for the awesome, Miss Riley Johnston!”

Jumping down from the stool, Riley took a bow then darted off stage amid thunderous cheers.

The stage lights dimmed long enough for one of the crew to remove the stool and mic stand.

“Folks, that girl’s the future,” said Jake as he slipped the Martin’s guitar strap over his head.

To be continued in Book 5 of the Silver Lake series.

Sunflower Art Therapy Session

Sunflower quote

I had last week off on annual leave from the day job at the salt mine.

What to do? Where to go?  The answer to the second question was not very far due to the current lockdown restrictions.

So, faced with the first question, I opted to put my week to creative good use. Well, Book Baby 6 isn’t going to write itself, is it?

First though I needed to-declutter my mind from all thoughts of “work”. What better way to do that than to spend an hour or two on a different creative pastime – colouring in.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

One of the things I’ve loved most about the long drives I’ve taken with family, while visiting the USA, was  watching the endless fields of sunflowers pass by as we drove down the highway so, when I stumbled across this design, I knew it was perfect to get me in the mood for focussing on Book Baby 6.

It worked 🙂

The sun shone all week allowing me to indulge in some al fresco creative writing (and some sunbathing.) Oh Happy Days!

20200416_142638

By the end of the week, I had written around 10 000 words and turned a corner with the storyline. There’s a long way to go yet but I’m now one notebook nearer the end.

This “proper/improper” author is celebrating some book baby birthdays….

FB_IMG_1479071188960

A few weeks ago, someone, who for their own safety should remain nameless, suggested that I wasn’t a “proper” author.
Biting my tongue at the time, I felt a red mist of anger swirl in around me.
Define a “proper” author?
Apparently, I was duly informed by this nameless soul, its an author who has a publisher.
I have a publisher. It’s KDP.
The exchange  hasn’t rested easy with me then I noticed the date that was approaching and smiled – 15th April.
Today marks the fourth birthday of my KDP published debut contemporary romance novel, Stronger Within.
Today also marks the second birthday of my third KDP published contemporary romance novel, Bonded Souls.

150418 birthday

Proper or improper author, seeing my name on the cover of a “real” book truly was a dream come true moment that will live with me forever.
Almost six years have passed since I began this creative journey. If you are a regular follower of this blog, you know the story. For those newer followers, I literally sat down on my front doorstep in the early evening sunshine on 8th May 2013 and began to write a story. I began to write just for me. I began to chase down that dream come true moment.
So far there have been four book baby dream come true moments (births). Each one has been special. Each one has been unique.
While three of the books form part of the Silver Lake series, they are all individual book babies who came with their own challenges. Like all children that we give birth to, they are related but different and each one is precious to me.
Book Baby 5 is still a work in progress and this is proving to be a bit of a “bumpy” creative pregnancy however I’m still on track…. more or less…. for a 2019 Book Baby birth.
The last six years have been incredible from a creative perspective. It’s been a steep learning curve and a hell of a lot of hard work and I don’t regret a second of it.
I’ve blogged about Stronger Within’s birth and Bonded Souls’ arrival into the world before. What? You missed those blogs? Don’t worry, here’s the links –

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2015/04/15/stronger-within-the-dreams-come-true/

https://coralmccallum.wordpress.com/2017/04/20/book-baby-motherhood-the-toddler-phase/

So, after four years as a published author, have I overcome the fears I mention in those previous blogs? No! Have I reconnected again with Silver Lake characters? Yes! Have I stopped blushing whenever I receive a compliment about the books? No!
This hasn’t been a journey I’ve tackled alone. There are a small group of wonderful friends who provide the love and support, the alpha and beta reader duties and who help to keep me motivated when the demons of self-doubt creep in. You guys know who you are and I love each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart. Couldn’t have come so far along this crazy creative road without you.
I describe myself as an indie author.
As far as I’m concerned, I’m proud to be a part of the indie author community. I’m proud of my book babies. I’m beyond proud of their Amazon and Good Reads ratings. Who would ever have thought that I’d earn 5* reviews for a book I’d written? I’m proud of the fact I’ve earned royalties every month. OK, most months the payment wouldn’t cover the cost of a cup of coffee but I’ve earned something from my writing.
So, am I a proper author?…… I’ll let you decide.

FB_IMG_1462305175602

To celebrate being  Book Baby Mummy to two books celebrating their birthdays today, they are both FREE  to download to Kindle for the day.
If you’ve not met Jake and Lori yet, not is your chance.
If you’re a Silver Lake fan, then thank you for your love and  support. There will be news about Book Baby 5 soon. Book four in the Silver Lake series is coming…..promise!
Happy reading! 😊
